Hello All

I am hopefully going to purchase a boat in Spain (negotiations currently in progress) and was wondering what I need to deal with. I have the RYA 'Buying your first cruiser'.

Hopefully I am not counting my chickens, but assuming we come to an agreement...

The deal is a private deal. Vessel is VAT NOT paid, and is SSR Registered. What issues do I need to deal with?

1) I will take the example contract from the above mentioned book.
2) Will have it surveyed
3) Will have a UK lawyer to act as 3'rd party to hold cash (should this be so?)

4) Issue - VAT not paid - how do I go about paying it? Who do I talk to about this?

5) Specifically, what legal issues do I need to deal with in terms of buying in Spain.

6) Who will insure a Ferro boat?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Charles

PBO did a piece last year on exactly this. Probably round about their August issue. Check with their reprint service.

Hi Charles, Just replied to your question on another thread re Ferro cement, and as I am in Spain, I noticed this one, too. Is it on the Rio Guadiano, by any chance?
I am no lawyer, but I would think that the sale of a British reg. boat is under British law, wherever it is lying.
Yachtmaster Ins. Services ad. in May YM says they take ferro cement, and offer cover for the Med. I guess they would be the ones to say who the surveyor should be.
The Vat issue is the concern of the custom and excise in the first EU country that the boat stays in for more than the period permited for visitors, at one time that was about a year, but that may have changed.
