Hi,

Despite the dreadful exchange rate, there is a boat in Holland that has caught my fancy. Does anyone have experience of buying over there and in what way does the process differ from Blighty? I read something somewhere about the vendor being required to rectify faults that come up in the survey.

Thanks Team.

Be careful with the standard HISWA contract.

As a purchaser, once the offer is agreed you can only pull out of the deal if the faults exposed at survey exceed 10% of the contract price. Otherwise you must buy or lose forfeit your deposit.

This is unlike the English version where you can decline to complete the deal giving any reason. Also, I'd send my own surveyor from the UK. At least you can find them easily if things don't pan out.

I've got a translation of the HISWA contract, PM me and I'll send you a copy.

To re-iterate that, verbal contracts are binding. Make sure you say that purchase is subject to a successful survey.
On that basis, it is acceptable to renegotiate the price post survey, but the UK norm of sharing the costs 50/50 doesn't apply.
I paid a nominal deposit deposit to seal the deal, but I'm not sure what the situation is on a more expensive boat than mine.
I would agree on getting a UK surveyor, especially if you have to go back to them on any issues post purchase.
