Most of where I have been has these credit card pumps in the marina and I have previously used credit cards- which is what the varous guides always refer to.
Now, sorry if this is a really stupid question, but I assume UK debit cards work? I only ask as I have never tried that, and everything I read always says credit card, credit card, credit card ?

My experience of these machines in France is that debit cards don't work, a credit card will guarantee the funds are available without having to check your account, a debit card cannot be guaranteed to have enough funds in your account to cover the payment so is refused.

Also if you have a nationwide or Santander Credit card you wont get a transaction charge. With a Debit card you will. Not sure about other banks.

Brest to La Rochelle

Never used a credit card, always debit and always fine; although can be a pain if the pump has a silly limit but most marinas will lift it if you are taking on a lot of fuel.

Last year we travelled from Ramsgate to Spain..And back again! Via canals and rivers.. In our Fairline Targa.

We only ever used debit cards..

Our best deals were finding Gas stations right by the canals.. Hop across with containers and fill up that way!

We used our garmin nuvi car sat nav on the helm which told us exactly where we were, and of course all the pumps!
This is a picture of us on the Basse Soane River.. Where we had a short walk to fill our cans up!

Your boat is running on Gas :ambivalence:

I am planning a first visit to Guernsey in a few weeks time, and in particular wish to take advantage of the modestly priced fuel.
Where is the best place to stay and fuel up ?

cheers

Hi, probably 'the usual' Victoria Marina. You refuel in St Sampson's harbour at Abraham's bosom. A few days before you want to refuel, call Rubis on 01481 200 800, advise the date you want to refuel and they'll give you a time slot. It's normally anywhere between HW +/- 2 so check the tides to make sure you are not compromised for returning to the marina.

As you enter St Sampson's, you'll see the small breakwater to stbd (it's called Abraham's bosom). Moor on the pontoon and the Rubis lorry driver will lower the refuelling pipe to you. Make sure you are ready to mop up any spills you might make (plenty of rags/paper towel). Simple.

Thanks Piers

if we struggle to fit in with a time slot in St Sampsons where else in Jersey or Guernsey is the best value to refuel ?

Cheers

Jersey
The fuel Pontoon just outside of the sill, next to the waiting pontoon is usually good value.
Any tide.
£500 max I think, so you need to stop, start if you want a lot.
Not manned
Not as good a price as Guernesy tho'....

Jersey..I fuelled off to the right just as you enter the port...mind the sandbank, but was cheaper than SPP..just.
In honesty, cheaper depends where you are to start with...I took on fuel in Carteret bcz it wasn't worth going to Jersey just for fuel when heading north anyway.

Boat works on castle emplacement is 56p litre at the moment , 4metres depth at half tide , no access at low tide . Edit , outside Victoria marina Guernsey
