Buying boat with DSC VHF - Changing MMSI Details?

OK so picking up boat on Saturday.
Just did a search on the ITU Database ( http://www.itu.int/cgi-bin/htsh/mars/ship_search.sh#start ) and it appears that the current owner has the boat registered there and I have his MMSI details.

The VHF is a fixed Icom DSC VHF

Whats the story here? Can an MMSI number only be entered in once?
I take it that the MMSI is unique to the person, as opposed to the unit?
Would there be a problem with me using the previous owners MMSI?
 
Ah that's great. I'm in Ireland so will be registering by boat with the Dept. of Transport

Who should I contact to update the ITU Database?

Is there anything else I should be looking at changing? I presume the DSC just bungs out my location (from the GPS) and MMSI. Then the rescue services pick up the owners details from the MMSI, which I will have changed the owner details of?

I will also need to change the call-sign I thought?? As I will be getting the Call-sign from the Dept. of Transport (I'm in Ireland). So should the ITU Database be automatically updated or do I need to contact someone??
 
DSC sets allow owners to change the mmsi number once only.

I have programed three DSC sets only but each one said I could only ever input two numbers.
I presume all sets give a second option ?

AS long as someone has not already changed the dsc set mmsi number once then you should be able to change the number.

In this case, the mmsi should also be re-assigned afaik.
 
Yes, i'm going to be exporting it from the UK to Ireland and registering the VHF as I have a Short Radio Cert. That gives me an Irish call-sign - just not sure what to do about MMSI - I think I apply to the Dept. of Transport for a new MMSI also

When someone sells a boat with licenced radio (as in this case) the seller is obliged (by the regulations) to cancel the licence, it isn't transferred to the new owner.
New owner then applies afresh.

If you are going to re register the boat in Ireland (southern) then you will be issued with a new MMSI number. All UK MMSI numbers start from 232 and go through to 235. Depending on your make of set you may be able to get a local dealer to reprogramme it for you. Failing that it may have to come out and be returned to the manufacturer/distributor for reprogramming.

Under the regulations, the call sign and MMSI number remains with the vessel irrespective of change of ownership or vessel name. It similar to a car registration number. You are correct in as far as the licence itself is not transferred by the details are/should be.
 
Would it be possible to keep the MMSI Number and use it with my Irish license? Or is 232 - 235 unique to the UK only??
 
If you are registering the vessel in Ireland then no. You will have to change the MMSI. 232-235 are unique to UK. Every country has it's own MMSI numbers and all vessels registered in that country should have it's country's MMSI.

I'm fairly sure that these are easily re-programmable. There is a gentleman by the name of Jon Brookes who, if he pops in here, will be able to tell you. He used to work for ICOM UK - he is now with Standard Horizon but he is a helpful sort of chap.
