For various typically complex reasons, I need to buy my DSC VHF set (NAVMAN 7100) in Portugal.

However, I live and sail in Germany (boat registered in Germany too)....

And I saw that:

"When you apply for a licence, or at any time afterwards, you can request an MMSI number for your vessel. It is important to remember that the dealer / manufacturer will require the MMSI number so that they can programme it into the radio at the point of sale. Any changes in details must be notified to the Radio Licensing Centre as soon as possible."

What happens if I don't have an MMSI when I buy the set?

I think I need to contact the German equiv of Ofcom to get a German MMSI and am trying to get this contact from the German forum, but thought that perhaps someone here had some ideas (much easier for me to understand in English!)

I don't want to buy the VHF in Portugal if there will be probs in Germany...

Most vhf dsc sets allow you to insert your own mmsi number when the set is new. They normally give you one chance, so be careful. If you get it wrong the set has to go to an agent to insert the correct mmsi.
You do not have to own a dsc set to obtain an mmsi, just fill in the radio licence application form and request an mmsi.

You enter the MMSI number into the NAVMAN 7100 yourself, but as has been said take care, as you only have one chance, so check it before you press the confirm option.

You should check that a VHF purchased in Portugal has all the channels you need in Germany as some of the channels are country specific. For example, my Navman 7200 purchased in France does not have the British marina channels.

Spoke to Navman importer & tech. in Portugal & they told me that there are different installation files for Portugal & Germany on the NAVMAN VHF 7100.
They installed one with the German version for me & sent it to the dealer.

All done in 2 or 3 days, absolutely brilliant service, especially in Portugal.
