Buying a Spanish registered boat ?

Hi all - we are considering a boat currently owned by a Spaniard and on the Spanish register. I noted on a previous thread that Elessar had bought a Spanish boat successfully.

We are a little confused by the Matriculation Tax. Is this only for boats imported INTO Spain ? Would we be liable for any other taxes if we were to buy this boat ?

I should say that we are not envisaging staying in Spain (certainly not for anything like 180 days) but moving the boat over a few weeks/month or so to France and thence back to the UK via the canals.

Would welcome any comments/advice as we have never bought a boat outside the UK before. The boat is with a broker and we have seen some partial scans of the documents stored with the Spanish registry.

TIA

You really need to re-register a Spanish boat, that is not staying in Spain, to British - SSR if you have a UK address or Part 1 if you don´t.

If the boat is Spanish registered then Matriculation Tax will have been paid as well as VAT IVA. Sometimes Spanish brokers pass their commission onto the buyer. Other than this I can see no reason why you should have to pay any other tax. I would check with the broker.

Marina charges are on a par with the UK and sometimes higher. Considerably and the daily monthly rate frighting. Try to get the mooring for a few months includdnthe sale price.

If you keep her Spanish registered you would need to take the Spanish government exams. The practical is OK but the theory all in Spanish!

There is a Spanish layer who specialises in boat business but what you are doing seems pretty straight forward.

I bought a boat in Spain and kept it there a couple of months before bringing it back.

The broker sorted it for me, a translation of the documents and deregistration from the Spanish register.

The Spanish register is like the ones for cars here. Lists all previous owners and also any name changes and if it’s vat paid.
The change of ownership was done on the British MCA form. I paid no taxes just a deregistration fee which was not punitive.

All very easy and so much better re vat status than the chaos here.
