buying a satphone 2nd hand

Am starting the search to buy an iridium phone from e bay.

any one got any pointers or help with pitfalls?

also some seem unlocked some are locked.

how easy is it to unlock the phone?

finally, is it simply a question of buying a new sim and putting it in the phone or am i missing something?

I bought an Iridium 9509A for a trip in 2011 and sold it again afterwards, got back 85% of the value.

Was not aware that they could be locked?? But perhaps that is possible with other networks.

If is worth buying an external antenna if you are planning to use it for data, the cost of the antenna will be more than paid for by the faster downloads and less dropped connections.

The guys at MailASail are well worth talking to and are very helpfull with purchase of airtime, and problem solving.

Have you looked at renting, that may be cheaper/less hassle. I sold my phone after it's use as the 9509A is an older phone now and I wanted rid while it was still worth somthing, there are now newer models available (although the upload/download speed is the same so I guess it makes little diffeence in use).
