When buying a new diesel engine for a boat from the main dealer, would you expect to pay for it before it was fitted , when the date for fitting has now been put forward by another week from that agreed when the order was placed. What would be reasonable under these circumstances?

I would expect to pay for the engine but withhold the payment for fitting. It really depends on the size of the company you are dealing with, you cant expect a small compay to absorb the cost of very expensive engines for a month, cashflow for every company is one of the biggest headaches they have.

IMHO I would pay for the parts and hold fire on installation payment.

When you pay for the engine - assuming you do - it might be worth sending a letter to confirm that this is in full and final payment for the supply of the engine, which is now your property. That way, if the company goes belly up, you've got a chance of getting your engine.
