Buying a boat from the Channel Islands

Has anyone done this and brought one back to the UK? If so how easy was it to re-register and pay duty? Having been messed about by Ancasta over the last few months I'm looking at other boats.

We bought our currentboat secondhand in guernsey in nov 14. were advised not to stop anywhere other than uk on way back as told french customs might insist on vat payment there and then. Our first port of call weymouth, rang customs line and flew q flag and told customs boat was not vat paid, given another number to call which was answerphone only and took more than a week for them to reply to message and then very helpful chap explained process and sent me form to complete and docs needed. Did that and was sent invoice for vat. Paid it and got laminated vat receipt. All done and painless, other than paying the bill!

Apologies for being a bit late - been drinking beer round the fire pit, watching Jupiter come out next to the waxing moon.

Anyway, bringing a boat over is straight forward.

If it is not VAT paid then simply contact the Yacht unit at Portsmouth who will advise on what you need to do.

Don't worry at all about the de-registering process. Just tell the HM at Jersey on your way out. If you are using a broker he will attend to this part.

Not a problem, there are flights from Exeter to Jersey, bring boat back to Southampton, train or hire car back to Cornwall. I'd probably treat myself to a night in the Lifeboat College at Poole.

Identified & looking to purchase a boat in Guernsey in the next month. Has anything changed significantly since Brexit or just the same process? Assume that since it is already on ssr & technically UK registered it doesn't fall into the RCD compliance thing, or am I wrong in this assumption. Cheers

The RCD applies to any boats built since 1997. Also the SSR in the CI is a different register to that for the UK.

The important bit is the VAT paid status. Whereas RCD compliance is apparently important, in practice no one gives a damn about that bit, and certainly not HMRC.
