calling all you seasoned sea lords.!
am moving back to sail after a long period of motor, am looking to buy around 40/45 beneteau, type boat. around up to 5 years old.
there seems to be a substancial differance in the price between,
privately owned for sale compared to charter or leased.
would appreciate any views on the subject and thanks in advance,
 
Decide which boats you want on your short list.. and then look at as many as possible...

Buy on condition... if a ex charter is as good as non... then go ahead... but boats used for charter are used a lot more so a lot of the gear may be shagged....

plus make sure that your not looking at the ex-vat price for the charter boats....

although, charter boats are usually better maintained than private as charter has to be certified.
charters are having a bad time just now so its a good time to buy.
 
The main reason for the apparent price discrepancy is that ex-charter boats are usually advertised ex VAT as they are business assets. So you will have to add VAT if you are a private purchaser in the EU.

Generally speaking there is not a huge difference in actual prices once tax is accounted for, but specifications can affect price. For example, charter boats usually have extensive inventories geared towards "living" whereas a private boat may have a different layout and might have better sails. Location will also influence price.

So you need to get all the information about the boat, work out the price to get it where you want it in the condition you want, including any taxes and commissions and then make your comparison.

That was not my point but in answer to your point ......

Yep - used to race Beneteaus (very hard) and in early 1990's raced a 45 footer which would be equal upwind with a stipped out two tonner (ex Admirals Cup) and waved bye bye to it downwind as they struggled with broaching whilst we powered away under full control!
