Morning,

I little early to be thinking about drinking, but....

Other than the Butt and Oyster, which we visit (very) (too) often, does anyone have any recommendations for pubs with food in Ipswich or around?

I know there's a section on this elsewhere on the forum, but nothing topical on there, apart from the return of a famous burger van in Ipswich ( which we will try....).

The Greyhound ( Henley Rd ) has a good food reputation
 
Not too many pubs with food near the water.
There are numerous eateries around Ipswich. Depends if you are on foot or have wheels.
Around the dock are:
Bistro on the Quay
Salthouse Hotel (pricey)
Mariners (the floating restaurant)
Waterfront
Quayside
Not sure about Isaacs for food never been but does beer and had a mini beer festival last weekend.
The Lord Nelson is a little way north east of the dock. Beer good but food not so good the last time I went there.
Loch Fyne (NE of the dock)
Last Anchor (Ipswich Haven Marina site)
into town try
Passage to India
Arlingtons (the other side of the town centre)
The Galley
Trongs
Aqua Eight

One of the best places for beer is the award winning Dove Street Tavern on the corner of Dove St and St Helens St half a mile from the dock. They've just started up their own micro brewery. They don't do food but I went there one time and people were eating a take away in there. Seems like a good plan by the pub.
Talking of breweries, the Brewery Tap is nice - south of the lock gate on the western side. It's the old Tolly Cobbold brewery.
Mmmm, fancy a pint now for some reason!!!!

I know a few who went for a swift one up the Butt ;)
 
Last evening we and the Full Circle's ate in The Aboretum in High Street Ipswich up the road passed the museum. The food was really good and the wine list received plaudits from Jim (nuff said). The stuffed squid followed by the pork dish was one of the best meals I've had for ages. SWMBO had a superb steak.

Only a £3.80 cab ride from haven marina with the excellent Steve's cabs 01473 222222.

The Ship at Levington is very pleasant, a bit of a walk from Suffolk Yacht Harbour but lovely views as you go.

The Last Anchor has been mentioned, but it is pretty pricey, and for evenings you generally need to have booked. We have been there and had lovely food, but only for Special occasions.

We have eaten at Isaacs, both at lunchtime and in the evening. Good food, can be very noisy in the evening at weekends though.

There is the Bristol Arms at Shotley Gate, about 10 mins walk along the marina road. I have not eaten there for a while but have usually had a decent meal.
 
There is a fantastic Thai restaurant in Ipswich up the old part of town but damned if we can remember the name - not cheap but one of the best meals we've eaten anywhere. The chinese restaurant just near the docks is pretty decent too. Don't know much about the pubs though sorry.
 
Will try these suggestions.
In the end we ate at Butterman’s restaurant in Wolverstone Marina.
It looked very new and shiny. There’s a decking area overlooking the west end of the marina and along to the Orwell Bridge – a good place to sit for the sunset. The restaurant has sliding glass doors so you still feel like you’re outside until darkness comes on. There’s some pictures of it here

And a few specials that I didn’t make a note of while going for the Deep fried cod, with chunky chips and mushy peas £10.45. There’s a kid’s menu as well, I think. All the food was good, and though the menu doesn’t extend much beyond what you’d get elsewhere, the quality of the food was better than most standard pub food (and cost accordingly).
A couple of real ales on tap available (I’d already had a couple before arriving so forgot to make a note, mental or otherwise of what they are). Service was good as well - at least four of them waiting and serving behind the bar – shame there wasn’t a bigger crowd in there – strange when the car park was full and it was a Bank Holiday Weekend.
