Mrs Judders & I are thinking very strongly about a move to Burnham-on-Crouch.

What are peoples thoughts on the place, the sailing and the many and various yacht clubs?

I like the place very much, for a visit. I'm sure the two hour trip each way to get to sea would eventually drive me nuts. My friend looked into the possibilty of moving his boat (Moody 426) but found the marina cost prohibitive compared to Titchmarsh. It's worth visiting just for the rack of ribs at Sargeant Peppers in the town though.

You will find it very nice. Full Circle and its predecessors have been there some while. Can recommend Rice & Cole for mooring and being taken the mickey out of. Marina competent but expensive. Burnham has a lovely wide ditch which if the weather is truly crap, you can go upriver for a five hour sail without upsetting SWMBO or other guests. Heading out to the sea thing up the eastern end can only end in tears.
But really, depends what you want. Last time I counted, 27 different places within one days sail (of interest) from Burnham.
Clubs are all welcoming, depends what you want. Catering for most tastes.
Burnham week excellent.
Pleasant little town, some good places to eat. Thai is good, so is Bekash Indian, and of course Sgt Peppers.

Be sure to buy a Mooro Anker Ball. See threads elsewhere if you are confused!

Absolute hub of the universe.
River is "quite" pretty above Burnham.
Lots of good hidey holes on the Crouch.
Choice of marina or swinging moorings.
More pubs than you can get slung out of in one season.
I'm there.
Need any more reasons?

Well along with the other posters, have to say Burnham would be a very good choice. Although I have to say (with shock and disgust!) there is another attraction that has been overlooked ........ the beer, it is bloody excellent! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Burnham is a wonderful place to sail, providing you don't actually want to look at the surrounding scenery, the sea walls are so high they reach the sky!, so it's not until you get out of the river, that you can take pleasure in your environment, Beer is brilliant, clubs welcoming, transport to/from a drag by car, not exactly typical of the Eastcoast. Super place to visit for the weekend but not a patch on the Colne/ Blackwater, Stour/Orwell, Deben/Alde etc. Easier to get to Maldon, Colchester, Tendring, Ipswich by car/Rail and property prices a tad more competitive. all in my very humble opinion. I know I'm going to get some flack!

Things just get better as you move up the coast - the Orwell must be one of the best rivers to be based on the East Coast, partly of course because it is in Adnams and Greene King country.

The Blackwater runs it pretty close, with a fabulous selection of places to go (we spent last Saturday in Heybridge Basin). The banks aren't as pretty as the Orwell though. I'm not talking Natwest and Barclays here.

I've only visited the Crouch, but I can imagine the dreary slog out to sea might become a chore if done regularly, a) because you'd really need to go with the tide in most wind conditions unless you like having the engine on, and b) 'cos its really rather drab and featureless. We weren't that taken with it I must say, though I would agree that the marina seemed pretty well run. We enjoyed going up the Roach to Paglesham, but apart from the old black shed we found that a tad featureless too

Burnham? No view, long ditch. West Mersea better sailing. Tollesbury better company. Brightlingsea much more character. Standing by for flak. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have any of you guys ever been above Burnham ?
It does have lovely scenery.
One advantage The Crouch has over Maldon, Tollesbury,W. Mersea, Colchester, Tendring [where's that?] is WATER when the tide goes out.
Not much out by the Whittaker granted, but miles of sheltered water & snug anchorages in the river.
Why am I trying to promote it, we get too many o yew furriners from Blackwater anyway?
Dan

Methinks Dan, that Judders should look in his almanac, if its the luxury of being able to sail at anytime of the tide unlike Bradwell, Burnham is the place!

As for the River Orwell, agreed a lovely river for sailing, unlike the inhabitants of Ipswich whom are bloody ugly! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Agreed the Basin along with the 'Old Ship' are a great setting. As for the Crouch it also has an attraction for animal lovers.........porpoises! Heards of these creatures congregate their on the sand banks at low tide.

Although I am now at Island YC, Canvey. I personally think that all the marks along the East Coast have an attraction of some kind, it depends on the tastes and requirements of the individual!

Eh???

Porpoises do NOT congregate on sandbanks. I think you must be thinking of seals.

I'll add my support to Burnham. Great pubs, good food in 'The Contented Sole'(?) and good racing unless The Royal Burnham are doing the start in which case the boat cannot be dry. Royal Corinthian is the best large club IMHO although many smaller clubs further up the riverside of which I have no recollection of being in, so they must be good.

Just beware of dinner suited old drunks fast asleep leaning against the river wall at 3am. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Greenwichman; for pity's sake doesn't anyone understand the meaning of the word "secret"??

...in answer to the question...Burnham - very nice, do take your boats there!

Re: Eh???

Are we sure that the confusion isn't because the sealife has been affected by Bradwell and thus no-one can quite make out what it is?

Not true. There's LOADS of water in the Blackwater - just a bit thinly spread at times. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

BTW, W. Mersea has depth enough for most (i.e not Mirabella V - even with keel raised) at all states.
