It has been suggested that the YBW forum 'flag' is a pennant not a burgee.......wot's the difference; where do you stick them; when should they be taken down and, importantly, if Kim gets royal patronage sorted for the forum can we all fly a blue ensign as well?

The British blue ensign has nothing to do with 'royal patronage' or yacht clubs with the word 'royal' in their title.

Wrong..

Looks very Royal to me..apart from Sussex

Blue Ensigns used by yacht clubs

Yacht clubs allowed to use the plain blue ensign are:

Royal Albert Yacht Club
Royal Cinque Ports Yacht Club
Royal Cruising Club
Royal Dorset Yacht Club
Royal Engineer Yacht Club
Royal Gourock Yacht Club
Royal Highland Yacht Club
Royal Marines Sailing Club
Royal Motor Yacht Club
Royal Naval Sailing Association
Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Yacht Club
Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club
Royal Scottish Motor Yacht Club
Royal Solent Yacht Club
Royal Southern Yacht Club
Royal Temple Yacht Club
Royal Thames Yacht Club
Royal Western of England Yacht Club
Royal Western Yacht Club
Sussex Motor Yacht Club
To know to which one, you needed to see the burgee of the club (either on top of the mast, or under a spreader), or the club's initials under the name of the boat (if the burgee is not flying).

The Welsh ...

Well no great surprise there then is there..

1) Royalty never gone down too well since last Real prince topped 8 centuries ago..
2) Can't afford pointless flags for most part
3) Not renowned for poncing about in Cravats like a bunch of t*rts looking for lost chins..
4) No time for arguing about marine etiquette from bar of overpriced 'Hoity' membership

!!

Re: The Welsh ...

Absolutely, Col Regs are for ponces down here... whoever has the biggest boat and wake get right of way, and cravattes are fiddly shell fish eaten by girlies.

The sorts of yatch clubs they have in Wales are where men are men and the barmaids eat their young....

yada yada..

(if the burgee is not flying).

Then the Blue ensign is being flown illegally, this is one of the ways Customs & Excise & the R.N. are able to pick out illegal users on their periodic checks.

Re: ? at least one more

Thank you Learner

nice to have a list of them but surely it should include the Royal Southampton YC as I think I've seen a lot of blues on their boats and there may be others, quite apart from the special RAF blue.

I must go and look them up.

Gosh what a saddo.

There's actually the with and without motifs approved lists but I didn't want 'MoBo chat' to look like 'SuckyourButt' /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Does this still apply if you have a defaced blue ensign such as RCYC, RBYC, etc?

RCIYC has a defaced blue ensign (Royal channel Island) and St. Helier Yacht Club has as far as I know the only defaced Red Ensign, awarded to the club after helping with the evacuation of St Malo in 1940.

rich :-))

Several YCs have defaced reds, two that spring to mind are the Royal Lymington & Lloyds. Many have defaced Blues including non-royals like the Thames Motor Yacht Club and the Cruising Association although the latter have cheapened theirs by dishing their Warrants out like confetti.

Any privileged ensign must be worn in conjunction with the appropriate burgee and the Warrant should be carried at all times. You will note that Yacht clubs striking their ensign will always take their ensign down 1st and their burgee 2nd. This is to ensure the ensign is not flown without the burgee.
PLEASE no more otherwise I shall be forced to get my Cravat out, don a Reefer sit on a bollard and smoke a pipe.

As a meber of The Tufty Club am I allowed to fly a special ensign ?

- I always carry my membership card.

Nick

My boat is here in time for winter....

Wales are where men are men and the barmaids eat their young
And... in Cardiff Castle resides a table with a hole in the middle that took the head of a monkey so diners could spoon out the brains and eat them.

The beauty of the forum flag/pennant/Burgee. Is that it is Unpresidented. Dont follow no rules except our own. And you can make them up. At will. Loads of folk fly it from there arial. Though I tried that and found that the stress ont, th, arial bent it some wat, in a dagerous fashioun. So now hang it from Radar thingy, which is alot more solid. Gardeners question time was never like this./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Lloyds?

I hope you don't mean the bank managers from Lloyds who sail a yacht called Thoroughbred, who ripped my dinghy off it's davits in Tregieur and then refused to acknowledge the fact, even after being chased down the river by a witness in another dinghy and then shortly afterwards by ourselves with the mangled dinghy hanging off the back, all the way through the Passe de la Gaine. Took months of insurance wrangling and arguments before they paid up. Bankers? no, wan**rs!

rich :-))
