Bunk cushion foam?

The V-berth of my boat has some nice looking cushions, 3" thick, made into several sections making it easy to access storage underneath, and covered with white vinyl material. However the foam in some of these has gone very flat (generally around the a*se area of the berth!) and needs replacing.
The foam itself is a basic open-cell spongy thing. I know this because there are some offcuts of it lying around and I can use them to mop up condensation.
We recently were aboard a modern Jeanneau and were very impressed with the comfort of the bunk cushions on it. As they were thicker SWMBO is suggesting we look to replace the entire V-berth cushions with thicker stuff, say 4". However this means new covers would be needed.
Is the modern foam a bit better than the stuff we have? Closed cell, more resilient? It would be very handy to be able to just replace the foam and not the covers. Also, where can I get the stuff from?

Cheers,

Rob

memory foam

I agree, memory foam is great, We have about 1.5" on top of 2.5" of ordinary. it works really well.

Hawke House at Gosport have free draining foam, i.e. they dont soak it up, so your bed stays dryer, they have other types of foam and the covering materials too.

To improve our bunk we bought a king size memory foam topper 50mm thick, cut it to the required shape placed on top of original cushions. Foam is in one piece so avoids joints in cushions. Under the cushions we have Ikea sprung slats. Found that these provide ventilation under the cushions and helps to prevent the condensation we used to have.

I have just bought some foam for the dinette area of my boat, the foam is 4 inch thick, and covered with stockinette, i have four pieces all cut to size, and it cost £120. so not cheap. and i have also got another half as much to do.

With you being up in on the islands, not sure if the price i mentioned would give you an average, as transport costs would be an additional markup for you.

Bunk cushion foam

The upholsterer who did a job for me suggested (assuming the existing foam and covers were not too far gone) that for flattening or denting of the foam, he would use some "man made fibre wadding" and stuff it into or under the affected areas. Upholsterers themselves use it on sofas, armchairs and the like. Worked like a dream and cost the price of a bottle of "the" single malt for his Christmas.

Foam

My forward cabin cushions were in a similar condition to yours and I looked at new foam as described above. Not cheap!

In the end I went for a proper sprung mattress which arrived last week. I had it made in 3 pieces to make access to storage lockers easy. Difference to foam cushions is huge. I now have a very comfortable bed rather than cushions that you endure. Cost was not much more than new good quality foam. Each join in the mattress is covered with a pad which means you can't really feel the join.

Mine came from Susan Hughes at Bedding for Boats. www.beddingforboats.com I think!

This is a job I am involved in at the moment.
The cost of foam is eye-watering so I am going for a couple of 4" (100mm) single foam mattresses from Ikea which will be cut to shape with an electric reciprocating knife (£4 out of Morissons)
The mattrersses are £49 a pop, or £59 for "high resilience". Ikea do mail order but I don't know what delivery charges will be to you

I'm really surprised that foam is so expensive! I assumed it would be pretty cheap stuff.
Is the IKEA foam closed-cell?
No worries about getting IKEA stuff up here, there's a man-with-a-van who goes every few weeks, and anyway I'm sure SWMBO could think of enough other stuff that we 'need' to justify a trip south...
