Follow on from previous post, I bought a new Yamaha 2.5HP 4 stroke earlier this year. Used it a few times in saltwater over a 10 day period to get from boat to shore etc. Then unused for no more than 4 weeks. On next use - no water from teltale. Took it back to supplier who found in that short time, salt crystals had blocked the teltale. Suggested I run it in freshwater if not going to use it for more than a few days.

Is this normal for these small 4 strokes? I never had this problem with the old Johnson 2 stroke that it replaced.

Now you know about it it's no problem. If it stops peeing the first thing to do is check the pee hole for blockages. It is only a telltale so no problem as such.

Small engine = small pump and small peehole I guess therefore easily blocks. Maybe Johnyrudes were a bit more generous in the peeing department.

I recently bought a second hand Yamaha 70 two stroke with a blocked telltale. It was quite a struggle with wire and eventually a small drill bit to unblock it, . Now I run it with fresh water through 'ear muffs' after use.

"could be that the engine is running hot and making the crystals sooner, maybe a thermostat faulty ?"

Do these small outbords have a thermostat? It so, where is it?

[/ QUOTE ] It appears that they do.
Parts lists and diagrams are HERE and, although this may not be exactly the right one as I do not know the full model details, THIS shows the thermostat #11 under the same cover as the anode #14.
