Bumpy ride leaving Cowes?

Someone left Cowes in a white mobo, sportsbridge cruiser, about 45ft at a guess, about 4pm today, blowing a solid F5 up the Solent, tide heading west...

They got a mile past Gunard and turned back, I didn't think they we're going to stand that for long. Looked to head back towards Calshot.

why would they turn back in a F5 in 45ft boat its no problem just the speed to the conditions .

Well, IMHO, a F5 with wind over tide would be extremely uncomfortable if heading into it, particularly in a planing boat. Going with tide and wind is a different matter. Of course in a 45 foot boat you could persevere at reduced speed but, if you don't have to, why would you?

Wonder if that was the one we saw fighting its way to Cowes yesterday lunchtime.

Because if it's anything like it is on my boat, although I might be saying "Yee-Hah", Junior FP will be going green, and Mrs FP will be saying something along the lines of "I thought boating was supposed to be fun" :ambivalence:

Plodding along at 8-10kts with waves going over the top is fine for half an hour or so if you need to crash around a headland.
But not so good if it's going to be like that all the way.

Exactly. they were getting a right pasting with water over the top. Western Solent, wind over tide, lumpy in most planning boats.

Solent is horrible in that weather. Short duration, sharp and confused. F5 in the irish sea is quite different. Mind you, its pretty much always a f5 round here

We came back this morning, left at 9am, on the remainder of the flood, flippin lumpy from needles to Studland, but we were expecting it, 8 to 10knots was plenty, until we could head off the wind enough. It was never dangerous, just unpleasant for a few hours. Still was worth it for the trip yesterday to Newtown Creek and then on to Cowes.
