BUKH DV24 ME - Can they be rebuilt once they have run away?

My old one did too.I could start it on the handle without much effort.

Yes, my BUKH 20 is easy enough to hand-start in summer or when the engine is reasonably warm. From cold in mid winter ... not a hope!. On one occasion in winter I had starter motor problems and made a point of getting up every few hours during the night in order to start the engine and keep it warm.

If single-handed you also need to contrive a way to release the decompressor while still cranking with both hands. (a bit of cord suitably routed and held under your foot works).

Climate wise things are easier in the Algarve...

I have 35 years experience of operating diesel powered vehicles and and deciding how cost effective repairs might be.
I am not a mechanic so the following should be read with that in mind!

If the engine ran away to such an extent that it vastly exceeded its designed max revs then the internal damage could
possibly include stretched con rods, twisted crankshaft and stress cracks in the castings.

In such a case, every single moving part and bearings would need to be replaced. At the very least, the engine requires
a deep, professional, inspection. Unless you are a professional motor engineer or gifted well equipped amateur, the cost
of ensuring a guaranteed repair of the engine would be prohibitive.

If it were me, I would be looking for a S/H engine with some assurance as to its past history.
