A friend has a Bukh in a rival 32 which has just gone bang (the bukh not the rival).
The oil pump has stopped working and the big ends have sized solid.
Is this a common thing?
Is it possible to get a replacement bottom end and pump?
Or should he just bite the bullet and replace it?

Very sorry to hear of your friends dilema, this should be repairable but will need a complete strip down, remove the crank shaft to check for damage and possible(most likely) regrind and new bearings, check mainbearings as well not too costly if he does the donkey work himself. Best of luck.

he has got it in bits at the moment and it does need a regrind and bearings but is it worth doing?
Bukh parts are not cheap.
..................................................................
The parts may not be cheap but if he rebuilds it properly it will be a wonderful engine, so much better and smoother than a modern one. They were, and still are, a premium product which is why they are out of fashion.

Had a DV20 some years ago and when it went bang stuch two and a half grand to wen engineer who gave it a new lease of life. Ran like a sewing machine.
Would I do it again, probably not. Three and a half would have got a new beta fitted.

Scrap it. But before he does, there are one or two BUKH spare parts I could do with....... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Seriously, you can get all the parts from BUKH [UK] Ltd, Poole and the 2 directors there are very helpful. There is a workshop manual and an illustrated parts manual available. It is an easy engine to work on.

I'm very surprised that the oil pump has failed. A sturdy well-proven unit that spends its life immersed in oil seems an unlikely thing to fail. What exactly has happened to it?

When my BUKH DV10, which was in poor shape when I got the boat, started to burn oil and generally under-perform, I dismantled it and priced up the parts I needed before making a decision about replacing it. The price of parts came to about £1200, which is a lot less than a new engine plus sterngear etc, so I went ahead and overhauled it. That was 8 years ago and it is still going strong.

The engine is 26 years old!

Have a 28 year old Bukh.

Have only owned it for 5 years.

It works well. Bukh have a very good reputation. Bit of an old fashioned engine design, but has proved its worth and quality over many years.

Had 10HP in an earlier boat, which just died with massive oil leaks.

I was glad to replace it with a more modern new diesel engine (kubuto)

Don't doubt the Bukh quality, but inevitably, engines don't last forever. Either overhaul or replace.

Simple (>???????>)

The boat lives in Castletown in the isle of man and it dries out in the middle of the harbour on legs.
One of the bolts that holds the legs in snapped and when she lifted the leg fell off. (this is quite lucky because if it had gone at low water the boat would of been scrap)

When the water went out of the harbour the boat lay on its side.
He got a phone call to say the boat was on it's side and he rushed down to check it.

Luckily the boat just lifted on the next tide they got on board checked it over and then pulled it over the wall.

The next day they sorted out all the problems and went to start the engine. Apparently it ran for about 10 mins then just stopped they started it again and the oil light was on constantly. it ran for less than a min then sized solid.

He says the oil was up to the level on the dipstick.

When he has got the engine out and stripped he said the pistons are free in the bores but the conrods are sized on to the crank.

The only thing i can think of is it has disturbed a load of muck from the bottom of the sump in going over and it has either blocked the pump or the oil channels when he has started it.

In Maui...1973 Buhk DV 20...Recently stopped running. Starts easily enough, gets to full speed and then dies slowly. I replaced all the fuel. I bleed the system and cleaned out the racor. Put a new seal on the lift pump. Im flumoxed and befuddled and I smell like diesel.
