Boat - Moody 33S (1980). Engine - Bukh DV20 (1980). Raw sea water has got into the engine oil. 99% certain problem was waterpump seals, these have now been replaced. The main problem now is removing the resultant thick grey 'gloop' from the sump. I have a small pump for removing engine oil through the dip stick tube but the 'gloop' is too thick for this. Access to sump plug is impossible and the oil filter connection is not easy to get at. I have tried pouring a litre of flushing oil into the engine and turning it over on the starter but it does not appear to have helped. Some one has suggested pouring some diesel fuel in to thin the 'gloop'. Would this work and if so how much should I pour in? I appreciate that I will then need to flush the engine with flushing oil a couple of times once the 'gloop' is removed. Any useful suggestions as to how to remove this 'gloop would be most appreciated. Thanks.

had exactly same problem a few yrs ago-dv20 blew a stainless core plug-had to have engine out to clear all thick oil/water and find the problem-hand pump etc wouldnt shift it !
fitting new beta at present -
some dv20 bits-pre heater{as new}-prop {3 blade and a 2 blade }1" shaft-various seals -speed seal etc all to go !!
pm me if anyones interested
good luck with the clean up!

Try using a vacuum pump. They when primed do the business even with thick oil. Tube fits down the 'dip stick' tube same as the brass ones. They work well I've used one for years and cost around £35.

The Pela type (vacuum pump) will work given time and you do not have to continually pump. Just create vacuum and have another coffee/bacon sandwich whilst the pump does its job.

As a help/alternative try warming up the sump. Not by running the engine but by an external source of heat such as a fan heater or paint stripper. A hair drier would probably not have enough output.

Once you have enough out run engine with a 50/50 mix of oil and diesel for 15 minutes (not under heavy load) to flush. You will probably need to flush a couple of times to get sump reasonably clean.

I had the same problem and running on a 50/50 diesel/oil mix cleared out the grey gloop. However I would advise checking the needle bearing mounted on the raised hand start front end cover. This is the bearing that supports the water pump drive shaft, and is usually damaged by leaking pump seals. Take the pump off and have a look - any sign of black colour is bad. Failure to replace this bearing if damaged will only lead to rapid failure of the seals again and more water in your engine. In my case I had to replace this bearing and also have my high pressure fuel pump reconditioned as it was damaged by seawater. The good news is the engine is now running fine, more thad 250 hours later.

Good luck,

Good luck,

Been there too. Check for play in the pump drive shaft. I had to replace mine. I pulled out all the oil and flushed with parafin. Turned it over by hand for a good long time then pumped that out. Expect to do a few hours motoring on (cheap) replacement oil then change oil and filter. It was fine after that and oil was always clear.

Hi Guys, just a note to say thank you for the advice and suggestions in reply to my 'sea water in engine oil' problem. I have put them all to use and I believe the problem has been sorted. I ran the engine over five hours inc 2 hours under load and the engine oil is still running clear with no signs of contamination. Thanks again.
John.
