BUKH DV10LSME\'s

Sorry if this is a mundane question, but has anybody had any experience of these little chaps?

"Neraida" is a Bene First Class 8, so is designed around an outboard. However, having inspected and measured our bilges under the cockpit, I have discovered that one of these little fellas should fit, and the thought of inboard charging, better power delivery, aesthetics and everything else that goes with inboads is rather appealing.

At 80kgs, its a little heavy compared with 29kgs of the outboard (but it will be in a better position i spose) and at over four grand is a mighty investment. So any pointers and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: BUKH DV10LSME\'s

The Bukh is a fine engine though prone to external rust in my experience and expensive to fix when they do go wrong. I've had 10s and a 20. Just sold a 20 year old 10hp for £500 so they obviously are reckoned by some to have staying power! I replaced it with a 13hp Beta twin because the Bukh was too big and heavy for my boat.

They are v heavy for their power output and large compared to alternatives like Yanmars and Betas but I can't speak for the Beta from experience yet.

Unless you have a special reason to choose a Bukh(very good no doubt ) I think that there are several alternatives that are just as reliable and long lasting and also much lighter, besides being considerably cheaper.
I would go for a 10 hp Beta.It has indirect cooling, two cylinders,so it is very smooth, weighs a lot less than the Bukh and costs a lot less .
This engine is also very small wich on a small boat is a big bonus.
Parts are very cheap as these engines are used in a variety of aplications, tractors for one.
I still remember how much I paid for a thermostat for my old Bukh. That's one of the reasons why I bought my 20 HP Beta.

Are you sure about your figures?

I have a DV10ME. I haven't got my owners manual handy, but I'm pretty sure the weight is more like 150 kg (incl. gearbox, flywheel etc). They are very heavy engines.

I think a Yanmar 1GM10 is about 80/85 kg, as I looked into it some time ago (& that's a lightweight engine).

There are 2 10hp Bukhs, one being half a DV20, cast iron & heavy. The other is the DV10L, a lighter unit with iron cylinder & head, but alloy crankcases. In saildrive 'SME' form it has the advantage of being mounted above the saildrive, with the crankshaft veritcal which makes it very compact. I have had one for over 10 years with no problems.
