I've just recommissioned a Bukh DV10 after a three year lay-up - basically just overhauled the water pump and changed filters/oil, etc.
After bleeding through it surprised me by starting on the first turn of the key, and seems to run fine with no smoke at all.
Great, but is it supposed to make such a horrible noise on tickover? It sounds like somebody tapping a drainpipe with a hammer - approximate rate of tapping 2-3 taps per second. The noise disappears when the engine is revved a little - should I be worried?
 
Diesel Knock? Either the injection timing could be slightly out (advanced) at low engine speeds or the tick over is too low. Try resetting the tick over speed to the correct value if the noise bothers you and see if that cures it

I suspect your problem relates to the chain drive and/or bearings of the water pump. These items are contained in the casing behind the water pump. The same drive is connected to the hand crank. The likelihood is that moisture (at best, salt water ingress at worst) has gathered in the bearings which are now corroded and probably worn. Spare bearings are cheap (from a bearing supplier) and expensive from BUKH but you may have to work hard to remove them from the shaft.
BUKH engines do not normally make nasty noises; if they do the sound is telling you there is a problem. Sorry, but it will only get worse! Best to investigate and repair!
Looking after your water pump seals and bearings is critical for a BUKH - this is the Achilles heel of an otherwise brilliant & long lasting engine.
Do not forget that BUKH in Poole is extremely helpful, with loads of good advice and has all the spares (at a price!)

My DV10 sounds like a rubber mallet hitting a drainpipe. It smooths out nicely as soon as you start upping the revs.
I would like to scour out the water channels but Bukh do not recommend any harsh chemicals as the 'o' rings are made of neoprene.
 
All diesels sound like a bag of hammers when started cold, also depends on whether it is an indirect or direct injection. Also as SimonJ has mentioned chain drives are inherantly noisey by their very nature.

An example of this is the difference between a Transit diesel and say a Merc.

Indirect injection has a separate injection chamber in the cylinder head linked directly by an opening in to the space between the piston and the head. This ignites first, then the flame spreads to the main cylinder. It was developed specifically to reduce the noise of diesel 'knock' in mechanically controlled injection engines. Unfortunately it tended to reduce fuel efficiency. However the quieter sounding engine was widely used to quieten diesel cars.

Direct injection, the injector fires directly in to the space between the piston and the cylinder head. This gives a better fuel efficiency, but is also noticeably nosier. The Old Perkins engined Austin Montego TD engine was an attempt at a direct injected car engine and although fuel economy was brilliant by 80's standards at 55-60mpg, you certainly knew it was a diesel!

Bukhs had direct injection, so sounded like a bag of old nails at tickover from new!

[/ QUOTE ]The DV10 and DV20 were/are INDIRECT injection, the DV24 and DV36 were/are DIRECT injection.

OOOPS - late night postings again /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif You are right of course, the 10 and 20's are indirect, but still have terrible knock at tickover. I was thinking of a 36 I worked on recently, forgetting the 20 I had once which was of course indirect.
