i am trying to get this sorted out, motor is one year old but has old regulator on it, so am cleaning up terminals etc. and reconnecting some wires

my question is, does a regulator sense when the battery is fully charged and stop charging it rather than cooking it (over charging it)??

A simple alternator regulator controls the alternator output at a specified voltage, or at least within a specified range, at which it will effectively recharge the battery but not over charge it.
