As mentioned previously my zinc anode by the regulating lever has broken off because I think the previous owner bought a none standard part & it is a little bit larger diameter than the standard part.(At least another one that I inherited with the boat).
So I have decided to drive it through a little bit at a time in relation to the amount of wear but I don't know how big the cavity is at the other side of the anode & I don't want to push it through unnecessarily & cut off the water supply. So,does anyone know exactly how big the cavity is & most importantly. If you are about to replace your zinc anode or have it out for inspection.Could you measure the depth by sticking in a rod or something?
Thanks in anticipation,Nicholas.

Nicholas,

you have no need to worry about space in the block. I have a DV20 and poking around to clear it out shows that there is masses of room. The bottom of the space had a number of pieces of anode that had dropped off and were just lying around in there. The anode seems to corrode from the nut out and falls off when the thread is completely exposed. Some of the anodes are tight in the hole and need a bit of fettling with a file to get them into position.

Agree that there is plenty of room. What I have found on my DV20 is that when the anode is relatively new the deposits on the outside make it fatter so that it tends to stick in the hole. Then when you unscrew the mounting-plug to examine it the plug unscrews itself from the anode as well as the block. To try and prevent this I have used some threadlock - there is enough metal to metal contact between the anode and the plug for it to work even if the threadlock is an insulator.

Thanks for the reassurance gents, that is a weight off my mind.:) (mine sheared off when it was being withdrawn probably because of that expansion problem that you mention Alan "making it fatter" & I found that the break was where the screw head embedded in it was such a large diameter that there was very little real meat or structural integrity).Bad design in my opinion.

Regards Nicholas.
