BUKH DV 10 ME Overhaul?

I am considering doing a full overhaul on the engine this winter. The engine, 23 years old, has ran for the last 5 years since ownership without any problems (no smoke, good oil pressure etc) but now refuses to start. All the usual checks, fuel, stop solenoid, compression, injector and high pressure pump have been done. Any advice on how difficult this would be and any idea of the rough costs involved would be appreciated. I have a mechanical / engineering background. Are BUKH's an engineers nightmare and a job for a specalist?
Thanks in advance.

From what you say, there seems to be nothing wrong with this engine at all. Except maybe a blocked filter or some other very simple problem that wont be solved by rebuilding the engine. I'd sort out the fuel starvation/ air in system, air filter? before looking for anything else. Its a diesel. It only needs compresion, fuel and air. Then it has to work.

couldnt agree more! dont do what we all tend to do, and dismiss the simple problems in favour of something more difficult and serious.

check the injectors, fuel pump and injector pump first. turn the engine over with the injectors removed but still connected to the pump (careful - dont get in the way of the spray. goggles!) does the fuel come out as a nice spray? and straight away or do you have to turn over several times before it does indicating an air leak and drain back.

if OK, then can the engine get air? unlikeley to be a problem but check anyway.

if it has fuel and air (and assuming the battery turns it over fast enough) then the problem must be compression.

check the compression with a tester. if it is down, does it improve when you squirt a bit of engine oil in the cylinders - if so, rings / rebore. if not, then valve gear.

cant answer your question about difficulty since i dont know your skills or equipment level. personally, i wouldnt think twice about stripping one, but i wouldnt go near an injector pump if you paid me.

G'day Philmc, and welcome to the forum/s.

I had a problem not unlike yours, same engine, turned out the spring on the governor had come adrift when the retaining clip broke.

Having pulled on apart, I would advise you make sure you have a very good manual, the string of clips, springs and cones that control the governor are a nightmare.

Apart from that it's a pretty simple engine.

Perhaps one of our more knowledgeable engineering types can advise how this can be checked without pulling the whole thing out of the boat.

Good Luck....

Had similar problem with my DV10 - ok one weekend, wouldn't start the next. Turned out cylinder head gasket had gone - only problem I've had with it in 13 years! I overhauled mine a couple of years ago; relatively straigthtforward, (didn't mess with governor!) but very expensive; £135 for gasket set, £100 for piston rings! However the guys at Bukh UK were very helpful with advice; they even sent me a photocopy of the manual & lent me a cutter for the valve seats.
