I need to replace the Stop Solenoid on my BUKH, and find the BUKH list price of £120 +vat just laughable.

Does anyone know if this type of solenoid is used in automotive applications, and therefore might be available from breakers? (unlike most car solenoids, it activates to stop the engine, rather than the other way around).

It is in fact a BOSCH item, P/N 0330 101 024 according to the workshop manual (suspicious of the 024, since it is a 12v item).

Has anyone opened one up succesfuly so as to rewind? (looks like it will be necessary to cut/grind the crimped-over outer end of the casing to gain access).

Incidentaly, reason for the burn-out was failure of the rather fiendish alarm system that relies on the oil pressure switch to determine the engine has stopped and sound the alarm..........what's wrong with putting up with an alarm for the few seconds it takes to stop the engine!!!.....will certainly be modifying if/when solenoid repaired.

Failing a solution to the solenoid, it'll be a Bowden-type cable to do the job by hand!

don't know the unit you mention but try a company that goes under the brand name 'Durite' as they make replacement auto electrical parts for almost any concievable item.....if it dosn't show up on the web try any auto electrical shop (not a main line dealer like Lucas or Bosch) to see if they have the Durite catalogue

Hi
Be carefull to note down the position of the solenoid body relative to the threads because I think(almost sure) that this determines the maximum rpm for the engine.I can check the workshop manual if you want.
I once repaired a starter solenoid on my suzuki bike and it was very easy.I would have a go at fixing it if I were you.

Thanks for the advice. I have indeed noted all settings very carefully. I didn't though realise that the stop solenoid had any effect on the MAXIMUM revs? Any further advice greatfully received.

My (ancient) workshop manual does cover both the old (manual press button) stop which appears to have been abandoned about 1978, and the the solenoid stop which I have (1984 engine). The translation from Danish is not always 100% clear!. Any more up to date info will be very welcome.

Thanks, Vic

Vic,
If it is any help to you, I can scan the page from my workshop manual and send it to you. All I'll need from you is a PM with your email addy.

When I had my stop solenoid replaced, the engineer used a tacho to see max revs as he slowly screwed the stop solenoid into the housing.

As I said, send my a PM with your addy, and I'll send you a scanned page from the manual.

regards,
Philip.

dont know if it helps but some times the wires break just inside the case, then it is possible to solder on an extension then replace inside the housing, one of ours failed 6 years ago, & the in season repair still works!

I had a similar problem with a friends Bukh 10 (same engine only one cylinder less) and got a stop solenoid of the shelf from a BOSCH agent for a third of the price that a BUKH dealer was asking. Worth trying your Yellow pages for a local BOSCH agent.
