Left mooring last weekend. Engine on for about 15 minutes, no problems. Returned to mooring, engine on for about 10 minutes. Alarm went off-no cooling water going through.
This weekend checked the cooling system and everything seemed OK. Then ran engine for about 10 minutes, running very sweetly. Great sail for about 3 hours. Returned to mooring. Started engine-no cooling water running through.
Any suggestions as to what is causing this intermittant fault?

I once had a similiar intermittent problem on our Bukh.

It turned out that one of the internal zinc anodes had disintegrated at the base and the stub that was left gradually found it's way through the system. It may have been there from the previous owner.

As it did this, with turbulence and erosion of the zinc, it formed a perfectly rounded ball, which just happened to be the perfect thing to block the cooling water flow. After turning off the engine it would travel back to it's original position before being flushed through again causing an intermittent problem.

Would strongly recommend that you fit an over temperature sensor on the engine exhaust/water mixing manifold to avoid over heating the engine.....even if this is not the problem.

Another problem, that I had last year, was that the cooling water pump impeller was (to put it bluntly) shagged. It has got hard (really, no puns are intended) and would not draw water up through the water filter, and thence to the pump and into the block. It was one of the blue run-dry type.

Changing the impeller to the original black type cured the problem.

This may not be the fault with your Bukh, but another possibility.
