My Bukh 10hp handbook says nothing on starting procedure about throttle position. The person who sold me the boat said the throttle lever should be well forward. Any comments appreciated.

My 25 year old Bukh 10 starts without any throttle - however this is rare. Most marine diesels need throttle to get them going.

My Bukh 20hp is about the same age (1984) and starts with about quarter to half throttle, though a lot quicker to start if the "cold start" is used for 20 secs prior to turning the engine over.

Also, you will notice the usual steam emission from a Bukh exhaust - very normal.

regards,
Philip

I have a Bukh 8HP, which is really the same engine. Starts best with about quarter throttle (out of gear of course).

Mine starts with no throttle at all.

If the weather is really cold, ie below 5C, then some help is needed as these simple Bukhs have no glowplug. I use a teaspoon of oil down the little hole for this purpose, the decompressor, and if all else fails, some coldstart. This has only been required twice in 3 years. The manual recommends using coldstart in cold weather
