For years I had a wet weather jacket with a built in safety harness.. Kept a clip on line in the pocket..

When ever I put it on - night, getting rough, raining etc I could fasten the harness and attach the safety line.... perfect!!! Just the job! Sadly the jacket is no longer waterproof and I need a ne one but it appears nobody sells them any longer!!!! madness!

Does anyone know where I can get one - another country?

I wouldn't fancy punching needle holes in a brand-new jacket that I wanted to be waterproof.

I hadn't realised these jackets had gone away (although I noticed you don't see many of them about). That's a real pity, as it's something I would have looked for in my next jacket too.

Seems a bit of a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. How many built-in chest straps have actually frayed away inside the sleeve with no obvious damage to the outside? Compare that to how many people have instead remained unclipped when things were a bit borderline, perhaps they should have been, but going to fetch a harness from below was just that bit too much hassle.

Isn't the current vogue that we all wear lifejackets with harnesses all the time? Therefore when you need to wear a foul weather jacket you would put your LJ back on negating the need for a "second" harness.

Wouldn't it be easier to re-waterproof the jacket?

I use the old style Henri Lloyd Ocean which has the built in harness. It is convenient and works well being at the correct height above the belly button and round about the sternum.

Not having built in shoulder straps is supposed to be a problem but I dont know why. I prefer it to my combi lifejacket. The floatation jacket is snug and removable as well.

Built in harness and LJ

I think the reason for the demise of the built in harness/floatation linings had more to do with the move to breathable fabrics such as goretex for oilies. It is difficult for manufacturers to achieve enough breathability if there is a harness built in and the foam floatation linings completely defeated breathability. My preferred hard and cold weather jacket is still an old HL Ocean Racer with built in full harness, flotation liner with a 275N lifejacket permanently hooked on the sewn in loops. Grab the coat and everything goes on at once - but you have of course to fasten the buckles and leg straps. I don't think much of that Stormy Seas jacket - it is not breathable but more importantly the built in lifejacket has only a 23gm gas bottle - that is not enough to qualify as a proper lifejacket here - 33gm required for a 150 N lifejacket or 60gm for a 275N jacket. Presumably you have to top it up by tube. I doubt if that would self right if unconscious and also it has no leg straps which are absolutely vital to stop any jacket/lifejacket combination riding up.
May you never need to use it!

Someone was selling jackets with integral inflatable life-jacket at the London Boat Show. Cannot remember what the compamy was called however. Maybe they will be at Southampton?
