I have a permenant search for Perkins bits and even whole engines as when my old 4108 gets too long in its teeth I plan to do a like for like swap.

It would be nice to find a genuinly reconditioned complete engine just to ‘drop in’ ( rather than a’ repainted’ unit but how can one be sure?

I have seen recently on eBay a refurbed short engine and a cylinder head with new valves at around £150 the pair.
This seemed like a start for building a new engine and made me wonder if there would be any sense in going in that direction.

Another option seems to be in getting a working engine with similar ancillaries to mine and getting one of the reputable reconditioners to give it the works.

Any views from the panel?

Better to stick to replacing like for like theme or we may have a bit of thread drift.
A few ball park prices would be interesting though

I am in the process of rebuilding my 4-108 with a rebuild kit from Parts4Engines.

The bit they don't have is a cylinder head, which is one of the few week points in the engine. They have a tendency (apparently) to crack and mine has.

Lancing does have new ones and there is a firm in Bradford (?) that sells reconditioned ones for half the price. However they says they always skim the heads as part of his refurb, but my workshop manual says 'never skim the head' of a 4108.

4107 heads fit (there are some good ones around), but you have to have all the cylinder head bolt holes drilled out slightly larger for a 4108.

The injectors in a 4108 head can be hard to get out. Some have two bots some have one. Long soaking with Plusgas helps.

I have just removed my working 4108 and did have it on ebay for £500 or £700bin and sold it within 5hours. But the seller has done the usual disappearing trick so looks like it will be relisted.

Its had, since I bought the boat in 2009: new Bowman heatexchanger manifold, head off and new valves, springs and valve stem oil seals, injectors and pump sent off to be professionally reconditioned by Lynxdiesels.com and pronounced to be in very good condition prior to them changing seals, nozzles etc, new lift pump, 3 new injector pipes (not yet fitted - you try to find replacements on the 'net). There was a slight wear ridge at the top of the bores but no scoring. I decided to fit a Marinepower MP446 and it should be here this week - I'll be too old and knackered if I leave it another year and the 20% greater capacity and torque, plus lower revving should mean its an improvement. We shall see in about a month...

Beware... many of the 'common' parts are not the same. A marine 4.108 and a military 4.108 genset/tank jump starter are not the same castings. Personal experience of the same!!!

An injector pump from one engine will not necessarally fit on another.... the bolt hole pitches have changed over the years.... and many more detail changes......
