No, it's not mine!

:D

reporting for a good friend Dimitris, with a Broom36 on the hard for the last 6yrs (and possibly on sale) and a P45 in action.
Dimitris is an engineer, also a hands on person and due to lack of construction work atm down here, with lots of time to spare. So he decided to go ahead and built a brand new 4.5m planning hull open boat from some drawings bought (iirc 150euro or so) from a naval architect in Athens) Model is Τοξοτης (archer in English) and this guy has over a dozen different designs on his website: https://sites.google.com/site/greekboatplans/designs/speedboats

Dimitris wants to built the normal (non-cuddy) version.
Anyway, he also happens to be a v.good carpenter (professionally, not an amateur like myself) and with a fully equipped workshop. So got the plans, got the right timber, cut the frames, keel et al, and on Sat I spent a good 6h helping him put the frames and keep together. Some jobs are not really one man and anyway it was really exciting working and seeing the frame of the boat come up in front of your eyes. Looks like next week he'll be ready with all frames mounted and epoxied in place and I can go and give him a hand in adding the 8mm ply skin.

A few photos follow and a couple of Q after that ;)

And now for the Qs:

Is there any reasonable/achievable way of vacum bagging a veneer to the ply hull in order to do a nice lacquering and forget about filling/sanding/filling/sanding/priming/painting? Alekos will do the painting if we go this route, but a lacquered finish would look v.cool (and cover all the tapered screwheads that will be used to secure the ply skin to the frames). I can get decent good quality veneers in Athens at reasonable prices.
I think I can get a decent and strong vacum pump thing, how is the rest of the setup organised? Does it need custom expensive bits, or is it fairly straight forward?
This question can double on my aft deck and other areas teak epoxying on the ply in MiToS, so if we manage a decent and cheap setup, we can use it on both Toxotis and MiToS ;)

Since I really like the idea of a cool timber tender, was thinking if there's anything at around 3-3.4m with space for 4 and v.light (probably with visible frames et al. Have seen a few on a quick google search, but nothing good looking at that size, any pointers? Not for this year, but maybe next. I do have a 10hp mariner (iirc) so would probably fly if it's light enough :D

Over the next couple of months i'll try and follow the progress of work and report here.

cheers

Nice project!
Lacquered veneer would be stunning. If you have the vac pump I think vacuum bagging would be very doable. I watched Fairline do my flybridge deck. They apply epoxy (which is quite wet and easy to spread) to one side - the deck in this case, see first pic. Then they drop the wood onto the GRP deck, apply vac bag sheeting, trim and tape the edges, and connect the pump. All looked easy and quick. The part I was surprised was so easy was sealing the edges of the plastic sheet - they just taped them and the thing tended to self seal quite well. And iirc the vacuum points just attached to the sheet using quick/easily attached and detached plastic things - I guess it was an off the shelf vac bagging system

thanks John,

I'm surprised it was easy to seal the edges, I'd have thought that's the difficult thing needing special tapes or methods.

Don't happen to know what pressure the system works at, and shall I assume the pump runs all the time it's curing? I guess there will be leaks and a pressostat will help the system up the vacuum regularly.

Will have to investigate further on that it seems

cheers

IIRC the pump ran the whole time but I'm not 100% sure and there is plenty of background noise in that factory. There are probably leaks, needing 100% run time. BTW, even if it only gets say 1/3 of a vacuum, 10psi of pressure under the plastic or 2/3 of an atmosphere, that's a heck of a good compression force, namely 3.5 tonnes force per sq metre.
