Build in or bracket?

I have made up my mind and ordered new electronics for AWOL. We will at last have radar ais and other toys.

AWOL is a walk around sports fisher so the helm is external. The only cover we have is a Bimini top with curtains forming a cabin area. I like this arrangement as in summer we can get our top off however this obviously gives us security issues with fitted toys.

My question is: Would you mount your screens on brackets so they could be taken home when not in use or would you surface mount them and rely on your insurers to pick up the bill.

Surface/built in mount would obviously look much neater but brackets would allow me to sleep at night, what would you do

Depends where you leave it. I have an £600 Garmin mounted into the dash of my 19ft Centre console, and after 2 years it is still there! Used it all over Solent, Fowey and Costa Del Sol. Not had an issue but it could be taken out in about 2 mins if someone really wanted it! I often leave my boat on a marina berth or in a compound and no trouble yet!

I would dearly love to have the units built in however I have always until now removed my kit (no sexist remarks pls ) the thought of leaving screens worth over ? well lets just say worth loads of (to me) cash fills me with horror. Still undecided but will have to decide shortly as the fibreglass man is about to set too my dash with his grinder


Uumm better explain that last paragraph. At the mo my electronics fit into a cupboard but the new screens will not fit in so the cupboard has to go. If I decide to have the units built in then I will need an angled dash forming but if bracket mounted a flat area will be required.

Martin, what do you plan to fit ?

I have a garmin GPSMAP 4010, radar and AIS neatly overlay, so on you boat would only involve removing one display, if you chose the remove option.

Tricky question to answer, as you know your location better than i do. Flush mounted does mean the display is left on the boat, but harder to steal.

I have gone for the Raymarine C120w with 18" HD radome and AIS 500. I already have a Raymarine DS600 sounder which I will also keep. Reasons for me choosing Raymarine are many fold not least I am used to their kit and the way it all works. I like most males don't do manuals so familiarity won the day oh and I also gleaned a very good deal.

I am swinging towards having the screens mounted on brackets so I can take them home every day. I do however like the idea of having them all flush mounted that would obviously be better looking and also be better when cruising just not sure about security when the boat's not being used.

I need to make my mind up soon as the fibreglass man has his grinder ready, jeez I hate it when they attack your boat with those things

Martin if you're having the GRP sections remodelled why not get Mr GRP to make you a grp "cassette". I mean a big GRP recess in your dash, and a big cassette of GRP to slide in with an angled face where you put the nav gear. Then you will have the built in look, but you can lift out the whole cassette, undo the plugs, and take it all home
