Went to the boat show today full of high hope and looking forward to upgrading my Raymarine rl72 to c78/80 getting Marpa, chartplotter & all the bells & whisltle and find out the only thing thats compatible on my boat is the radar cable, the radome is 2002 a year too old ... so disappointed I joined the cruising association to cheer myself up with their free almanac .. fell in love with the Malo 39,bought 24M of anchorplait,2 fenders, a dodgy hotdog, a big flag and farted when I went past the Antipasta stand!

Where did you get the anchorplait? I couldn't find any. Also, who did you get to lug it out to your car? Also (also also) did you think the SBS was a bit... thin? I don't think I'll go again.

Jimmy Green .. but hardly a bargain and agree with the thin bit!!! Disappointed Jimmy didnae do his wee £10 bags this year

I am SO glad we decided yesterday we wouldn't bother going this year. Bring on the boat jumbles. Do tell about Malo 39. Though someone also mentioned the considerable beauty of the Spirit 70, and dagnabbit, I feel the need for yet another boat. Decisions, decisions...Buggrit, right now I'd settle for replacing our old car, which is being crushed into a (no doubt perfectly-dimensioned) cube as we speak somewhere outside Stuttgart...AND I've not SEEN my boat for 3 weeks.

Grrr aargh.

looked at
Malo 39 - simply superbe
Najad 380 - simply superbe .. toss a coin between these two
Hanse 40 something ... erm No thanks
Degero 331 .. very interesting, worth a look
Southerly 115 .. disappointing
Starlight 35 .. excellent but expensive for what it is
Rustler 42 .. excellent but expensive for what it is

.. changed my mind, my true love is the Najad 380

Congratulations (twice).

Once on having the good sense to join the CA, and once on recognising a superb boat. I'm in CA, and my club has just ordered a Najad 380, so I'll be sailing it next year.

Southerly 115 .. disappointing

<hr></blockquote>

Why? I like Southerlies and if I ever go back to half boats they would be top of my list of boats to seriously look at.

What did you find disappointing?

<hr width=100% size=1><A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.topcatsail.co.uk>Woof</A>

Well, they were top of my list. But they no longer have the inside helm position and seem more like a standard yacht with big windows albeit able to dry out with the lifting keel.

<hr width=100% size=1>

I wonder why they took that away. The first one I ever really saw up close was next to us in Barmouth last year. We are now friends with the owners and I have been on board a few times.

I thought the deck saloon was wonderful, totally deceptive from the outside, but especially the steering position inside without having to put up with a wheel house like on a fisher or similar. So you still have a totally usable cockpit.

Did you ask Northshore (is it?) why they have taken this step?

<hr width=100% size=1><A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.topcatsail.co.uk>Woof</A>

I did and they said its been away for 5 years now, but the interior is now a standard saloon .. shame really. The Degero layout is very similar to the way the Southerly used to be.

I looked at:
Hylas 46- Lovely yacht, nasty salesman, would not buy it purely cos' of him (and it costs loads to much!)
Island Packet 370-Yuk! and not my kind of boating
Beneteau 57-Superb, best boat there. I want one but can't have one.
Beneteau 473- Excellent, loads of room and friendly beneteau people gave me a special appointment after the show had finished which was nice of them.
Beneteau 423- Same as 473 but smaller and about the right price.
Jeanneau 45- Horrid! The aft cabins are seperated by a 1/8 inch piece of plywood held in with Self tapping screws. The cockpit table was made of rough cut pine and looked positivly nasty
Jeanneau 49- Nice boat, except it had the same table as the 45,,,yuk!

I noticed that Beneteau at least put their Genoa winches within reach from the helm, it is a five minute stroll to reach a winch on the Jeanneaus,,,why?

So, If anybody spots a reasonably priced 2001-2003 Beneteau 473 for sale, please tell me!

Why don't the organisers have a temporary Lottery machine at the top of the pier?

I really enjoyed the show -I'm going back again this weekend to do some more mundane stuff.
The Najad 380 is also top of my list, but way out of my budget, and I feel the need for something a bit faster at the mo.
I guess the Hanse 461 is not to everyones taste, but I thought that it was refreshing to see someone departing from the variations on a theme which everyone else is doing, also did you notice that it was fairly light (hence fast, and more payload available) due to an epoxy rather than polyester hull? (I must point out that I have ordered a Hanse 371 and Hanse gave me some free show tickets, so perhaps i'm not being thoroughly objective!)
The smaller southerlies I really liked - esp the 35RS - which is a 105 i believe? Low freeboard is something I really cannot do without and I thought the other southerlies had much too high freeboard.
If your serious about buying one I'm sure they could fit an inside helm position as they are hardly productionized builders.

Anyway I'm looking forward to another visit at the weekend.

We went straight to the Najad 380 when the gates opened - and found Talulah already there. Also went on HR and the Sweden 45, but the Malo 39 was definitely top of my list. SWMBO prefered the Najad 380 too, so when you buy one, you will have at least one volunteer galley maid!

ONe thing that put me off the Malo was the payment terms.

30% up front, 30% 8 months before delivery, 30% 4 months before delivery, 10% on delivery. Errm, if I was buying a brand new boat of this size, I wouldn't want to be waiting more than 8 months for it.

I wonder if its generic across the industry, whereby the more you spend, the longer it takes them to build and deliver ??
