Have you concidered the Furuno 1622.
It is high powered (2.2 kW) and resonably priced. Good performance and guardwatch and Watchman features are very usefull IMHO.

Re: JRC - OK for me

Bought a JRC and found it easy to fit. I find new fangled contraptions fitted with all sorts of buttons difficult to comprehend ( never could work out how to get the old RDF to work) but the JRC works well for I want - just to see others before they run into me. Did not bother with all that it must be high up crap - mounted at the top of my ladder just below the deck light and it still shows up land on the couple of occasions I 've had it on more than 6 miles range

I've had a JRC1500 radar for the past three years or so and mount it in the cockpit. Although it is waterproof the LCD display is susceptible to changes in temperature in that it gets darker as it gets warmer, necessitating changing the contrast frequently. Apart from that it is an excellent tool at a reasonable price.

You\'ve obviously had a different catalogue...

You've obviously had a different catalogue from the rest of us, Steve.

Raymarine do quote a package price - it's the "Radar System SL72 Plus" on page 2 of the price list, complete with 7" LCD display, 18" scanner and 15m of cable for £1492 list (and typically £1200ish from the discount chandlers).

As for the displays being "min £1205", they actually start at £1010 list (say £825 in real money). And the scanners (which as you said, do start at £900 list, or say £730 in real money) are "all supplied with a 15 metre cable". Mounting brackets are supplied as standard with the displays, but you can buy them separately too - but the £42 mounting bracket you quoted was for the big heavy 10" CRT display, wasn't it?

MARPA???

I'm looking at radars at the moment, and as far as I'm aware, the SL72 doesn't have a MARPA function. Are you sure it's got it?

Re: But....

If you bought your Raymarine on line was it much cheaper? I notice many posters say buying JRC & Furno from the states is much cheaper anyone with experience of buying Raymarine direct from the states?

Re: MARPA???

i have marpa on my RL72C Plus Colour plotter / radar.
for marpa to really work in heavier conditions im told the Furuno gyro compass is better than the Raytheon autohelm 6000 fluxgate as fitted @ the moment. although this works reasonable well.
THIS UNIT IS FOR SALE as propose tp up-grade

re-JRC Radar

Just purchased 1500 from states no problem with warranty but you need a short mast as US models come with 5 mtrs less cable[ok if you have a pole.

Re: re-JRC Radar

I have a JRC1000 and find it works quite satisfactorily and reliably, giving me everything I need except perhaps two bearing lines and range rings.

The bearing accuracy is actually quite good. You simply have to make sure the bearing line is in mid echo.

If I were buying a new boat, I would buy the same set again.

Re: Raymarine from USA

From what I have found, there does not appear to be any discount on raymarine items in the States - In fact they are slightly cheaper here, and thats before tax!

Re: MARPA???

RL72 is a totally different product. I want to know if MARPA is on SL72, as Jools said.

Re: MARPA???

I was told at LIBS that it did, due to finally get mine tomorrow, but from the raymarine site >>

Pathfinder PLUS offers the following features in addition to all of the standard Pathfinder/Raychart features:

-MARPA collision avoidance system on all displays (including 7" units)

Reading the manuals online it does have MARPA, though there seems to be very little written on actually using it. I have been told that in order to use MARPA you must have a fluxgate compass with NMEA 0183, for best accuaracy 10Hz output.

No MARPA on SL72 Plus...

Raymarine's 2004 brochure clearly says that the SL72 Plus does not have MARPA. If you were told it did, then you might be able to negotiate a reduction in price.

Incidentally, I think the "true motion" display option you mentioned originally also needs heading sensor input to work.

Re: You\'ve obviously had a different catalogue...

Well, as I said, I was sitting on the loo.

Still overpriced IMO though. My Standard Horizon Colour Plotter cost me (after bargaining and convincing the man that it was unlucky not to sell to your first customer of the day within the sound of Bow Bells) £500 including a wide CMap NT+ card.

The man on the Raytheon stand did say though that you'd need to spend £4000 (as did my old boat's new owner) to get a worthwhile radar setup.

I don't have radar and have no intention of fitting it as fog isn't much of a problem in Greece. The problem is keeping the butter solid for which I paid out plenty-spondu. to the enchanting young lady on the Merlin Marine stand.

Re: No MARPA on SL72 Plus...

hmmm, it arrived today, finally. Although they have sent me one with a 15m cable rather than the standard 10m which I ordered and paid for, I think the problem being that MES could not get any 10m cable options, so to shut this customer up from calling every 3 days about his order, 'just send him a 15m jobbie and be done with him'

Anyway, powered up the screen and sat playing in simulator and cannot find option for MARPA, the salesboy was very clear that I wanted this option as we were talking about compatable fluxgate compasses and the like. So, will marpa appear when I hook up the dome onboard and can run the system properly, I do not have a 12v power supply that will deliver peak 8A.

Or have I been lied / misslead here. This is a bonus feature and realistically I would have still bought the system without it, but should I complain to Raymarine, is it worth it?
