Budget for a year's cruising in EU

Nobody has mentioned the cost of dogfood yet

Yes, you could reduce your provisioning spend considerably by sharing rations with the dog. If that became a little too boring, for variety you could try cat food, though that is more expensive than dog food and if the dog develops a taste for it the budget is truly scuppered!

Seriously though, you can plant a 26' boat in all manner of free or nearly free places around Britain. You just need to read the pilot books carefully and occasionally ask any longshore pirates you happen to meet. e.g. Many UK harbours still boast a number of public hards on which you can dry out for a tide for free, subject to harbour dues.

Also the occasional 'accidental' grounding can be used to good effect...

A lot of harbour authorities' advice tends to lean towards 'go to our marina where you can have a shower and pay us for the privilege' while they conveniently forget that you can anchor for free in the perfectly sheltered bay just outside. (i.e. much of the channel Islands)

How long is that bit of string?

The answer is "it depends". How you define comfort? Some folks are able to live happily on 1,000 a month, others on less and yet others want this and more per week.

Only you can answer that.

From the various reports I have read, this seems to be a minimum for a RTW type cruise for a couple prepared to live a frugal life-style. Say 35' boat. But you cannot spend money on the ocean.

I believe that, more commonly, budgets are around £2500 pm when people enjoy a limited amount of eating out and sight-seeing plus a trip or two home in the year..
