Brundall to Norwich

How far into Norwich are you going? Trowse swing bridge can swing, but is manual since the gubbins are knackered apparently. Further up to Novi Sad bridge (Riverside) etc there are different heights to get under. I can recommend lunch at the Water's Edge at Brammerton on the way.

This has all the heights and bylaws etc: http://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/boating/navigating-the-broads

Thanks Robin B and Aquapower. We are 5 metre airdraft and draft 1.3 metres, so just wondering if it would be a problem. Been as far as Brundall but not beyond. Thinking of spring time. During a quick visit today ( by train) to Norwich thought it would make a nice place to put on the list.

For what it's worth I wouldn't take our boat into Norwich. You won't get to the Yacht Station because the fixed road bridge is too low and whilst you might get to moor somewhere along the riverside the reality is that it is at the centre of nightlife and not somewhere I would want to moor, certainly not overnight. There are some moorings (only room for three or four boats) by Whitlingham Broad so a walk up through Trowse into the city is a possibility or alternatively a taxi.

Mainly hire boats that go into Norwich and not many private boats and certainly not any sizeable ones.

If you want to go to the city then Brundall has a train station next door to Brooms and it is less than ten minutes.... :)

Didn't like Whitlingham Broad as an overnight stop. Arrived midday to an empty mooring other Broads Authority Ranger, took local bus into Norwich. Returned around 21.00 to find remainder of the mooring occupied by undesirable river dwellers who were drinking heavily, shouting, swearing and smoking dubious hand rolled cigarettes. Enough to say I didn't get any sleep that night.

Brammerton Common is as far as I go now for an overnight stop. If I want to go to Norwich I would stop at Brundall and catch a train.

Your draft is fine, but you will certainly struggle with airdraft.

Best bet to phone the Water's Edge, speak to Lee and book a mooring 01508 538 005. Good food, nice place, and you can plug in. We have moored overnight outside many, many times. It's much nicer than Norwich.

It's interesting to go through Norwich by rib, so crack out the tender and explore! Lots and lots to see.

I also would not stay overnight any further up than Brammerton. As mentioned, Whitlingham and Commissioner's Cut are favourites for some elements which do not make for sound sleeping. Norwich Yacht Station is at the end of Norwich's nightlife area and boats have been interfered with overnight.

Enjoy the area - there's lots to see and do if you have the time.

Our permanent mooring is very close to Norwich, but outside the bridges. At 2.6m air draft we can clear most bridges at mid to low tide. To cruise into the City centre is very interesting and worthwhile, but not for an overnight stop. Certainly the Waters Edge ( ex Brammerton Wood's End ) and Surlingham Ferry House are worth a visit when you head in from Brundall.

Eurybia Greg2 RobinB and Swordfish all good advise. Was all quiet on riverside yesterday so maybe gave a false sense, of what it will be like in spring. Will look at alternatives when we get home. Thanks again. Neil

Hmm. Might change our plans now. We had planned a night out in Norwich as we have not been with our own boat yet. Might change our mind now and have a night elsewhere.

I wouldn't have thought that you would have any problem getting under the bridge before the Yacth Station and I think that mooring there is likely to be okay. We wouldn't get under so our only option would be Riverside which is just too close to pubs/clubs.

If you do go up just be aware that Prince of Wales Rd and Riverside are very close by and are the centre of nightlife. There have been occasional problems with revellers thinking it is a jolly old wheeze to cast boats adrift but I don't think it is a regular or persistent problem and leaving the mud weight/anchor down on the outboard side of the boat is usually enough to give peace of mind. Bottom line is that holidaymakers go there all the time and if you go further down away from the bridge it is fairly quiet.

Think we are going to head into Norwich for a few dinnertime drinks and to do a bit of shopping and then head back out of town for the evening.
