Brown spots on a new OB. Normal??

Hi Guys

Inspecting my new OB came across this part which i think is some sort of gearbox or something. Ob is 1 year old is it normal to have those like brown stains in the metal thing? Thanks for your help.View attachment 61566. That metal is situated under the gear ring cover. Anyone knows what the metal is? and should it become brownish after 35 hours working only?

I expect the meshing faces to be bright, and the rest to be covered in clean oil.

Have you drained the gearbox, and was the oil milky white ?

EDIT

It's normal for an oil change to be made after the running in period as part of the purchase deal. was this done, cos if so, then it looks as if someone might have forgotten to replace the oil.

It does look a bit rusty, no idea what it is. How many hours have you done with this outboard?

I had a suziki df300 which had a three year full warranty and two parts only I think. Any problems, get on to your local dealer.
 
yes oil was changed infront of me. oil looked normal. even i did not except would contain those brown patches after 3 months only in water.

only 35 hours . had first service done . will go to local dealer.
 
That's the starter motor gear.
It's made of hardened steel, so it will become a bit rusty in normal use.

I would give it a spray with Mercury Corrosion Guard Spray (about £15) before tucking it away for the winter.

Thanks for your help. Will do as advised. would use corrosion block. what u think?

What FP said, don't worry. Those steel bendix are rock hard, and having a high carbon content, tend to corrode a tad.

A good squirt of Corrosion Guard, or similar, will keep the worst at bay. TBH, I used Corrosion Guard on most things I own:- boat engine and deck gear, Italian rustbucket classic car and 2 Italian classic bikes. I live a 100yards from the sea, if it can make Italian steel last 30 years, that's ok in my book. :rolleyes:

ok mate. Thanks a lot. You and Fp made me put mind at rest. As u can see i am not mechanically inclined but try to do my best to mantain machinery at their best. when examining i came across those and was worried as its relatively new and made a big sacrifice to buy a new ob. Thanks for your input and comments. appreciate. Yes heard very gd reviews re corrosion block.
 
Karnic, althought you wrote "gearbox", which is at the bottom of the o/b near the propeller, that looks like the starter motor, as others have said. Can you confirm that is the starter motor ring gear? At top of engine, usually.

If it is, then I also agree that the surface rust like that is absolutely nothing to worry about and I would put a small bit of grease/oil/etc on it

Yes it is the starter motor. confirmed with the dealer. Thanks for your help and sorry about the misleading but as u are aware im not mechanically inclined but was worried. thank you all.
