Brown diesel

Have been doing a lot of work in the engine compartment which required emptying the fuel tank so that it could be moved for access. About 80 litres of diesel (I'm a raggie) has been stored in a variety of jerricans for about 6 months. When I came to refill the tank I noticed that the diesel had changed colour. It does not have the characteristic diesel smell, but neither did it have the smell of diesel bug contamination. Any thoughts on the advisability of using or disposing?
 
Know what you mean, I really thought Depsol would have jumped on this. He must be off playing with his boat.

You just wait though. He'll find this sooner or later and then watch out. Bet he recommends something.

In the meantime, do a search for, and it hurts me to mention this, Soltron. There I've said it.

you did not say if the jerry cans where plastic but fuel does change colour when exposed to daylight as in thru the walls of a plastic can. Diesel is not always stable and sometimes after storage will suffer from wax crystalline growth known as fuel derived dirt. If you fuel has this problem a sample held up the light in a clear bottle will be opaque.

The Navy keep their fuel in store for 20 -30 years some without any problems and some develops this waxing problem, it has been the subject of extensive research since it does plug filters but I don't beleive the problem has ever been solved.

If in doubt don't use it.
 
Hhmmmmm very difficult without seeing this one to tell there are several shades of brown some are ok and some are not. could be texture that tels you what it is more than colour but if you want send me a sample and I'll get you some results for free but I dont want anyone else jumping on this freebie ride.as it is not cheap testing fuel.

Give me more details first on the brown colour and rub it thru your fingers and tell me the consinstency rough smooth crystal like or whatever. You said it doesnt smell like diesel or the bug which confuses me slightly. Put some in a clean jar shake it about with lid sealed and then let it rest for 6 hours and tell me what happens to the sample.

If you can give me this info I can see what I can make of it for you. Just to prove to people I dont just say Soltron Soltron Soltron all the time.

Oh and if you are wondering where I hae been I have been to Herm and Sark, I was going to Lezadrieux but had problems which am about to do a new post on. Thanks for asking anyway.

This is very kind of Depsol, but really!!

If my maths serves me correctly, 80litres at 26 p per litre is £20 !!

Dump it and save yourself and Depsol the agro'.
 
I was in Yarmouth yesterday and in the midst of complaining about the cost of fuel, one of the Harbourmasters told me about a bloke with a 17' sailing boat which had a 2hp outboard on the back. He took it around Britain, got back to Yarmouth and moaned like hell that he had to put £2 of petrol in the outboard.
So, 80litres of diesel is probably enough to power achillesheel's yacht for several decades
 
Its not the cost of the diesel its the cost of the damage that is left by the crap in the tank whether you dump the diesel or not. Prevention is better than a cure.
