Brought the wrong length cable can they be shortened

Pair of side cutters will do the job.

It might help if you say what cable and what application.

It is a morse throttle cable

Last time I fitted one it had dedicated ends can't you lose the excess somewhere. I wouldn't advise cutting it.

They come standard lengths and are surprisingly easy to measure, once you remove them, leaving a mouse line.

You could try a loose loop if you have somewhere to hide the loop.
