Broom Query - 39KL/42CL v\'s 38CL Layout

Broom Specific Query

The Broom 39KL (previous MBM Calm Voyager) seems essentially identical in every respect to the previous 38CL model, except for the revised cockpit layout, easy fold canopy and moulded in steps to transom platform. Non Broomies please forgive these rather specific queries /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have a few queries for current owners of 39KL or 42CL that had moved from a 38CL:

1. DECK ACCESS: How do you find the single aft access door to the cockpit, as opposed to the two either side on the 38, especially when single handed?

2. HELM BENCH SEAT: How do you find the helm bench seat as opposed to the individual seats on the 38? (ie ease and speed to get out for deck access if somebody sitting beside you)

3. CANOPY: In practice how easy is this to completely open and stow on a nice day? (a pain on the 38CL).

4. RADAR ARCH: In reality how quick easy is it to drop the lot including the arch? (ie for low bridge) Is the motorised arch a must?

5. BELT DRIVE DAVIT ARM: Have any of you used this to carry a small rib (ie 180kg, 3.5m inc 30hp), and if so how user friendly was it compared to a pair traditional simpson davits.

OceanFroggie, I'm not sure you're going to get detailed replies to these very specific questions as I dont know anyone on the forum with any of these Broom models. You could try a PM (private message) or e-mail to Hugo Andrae (ex MBM editor, now editor MBY) or to Simon Collis (current MBM editor)
FWIW and that is'nt much, my Broom experience is limited to an early '90's Broom 37 which I owned a few years ago but I always make a point of looking at the latest models at shows because I think they're excellent boats and, if I was still in the UK, I'd probably still have one
I cant see that the side door access is an issue on the 39/42 because when you're helming solo, you would'nt be using the side doors to access the decks. Whenever I've sat on the 38CL seats I've found them a bit hard and small and I prefer the shaped bench seat Broom fit to other boats which feels more comfy. The old style canopy with poppers is a complete pain in the arse and I was really impressed by the new double latch canopy which just seems so much easier. I'd buy a boat for that alone. Why dont other builders do it? Having had the folding arch assembly demonstrated to me, it seems like a very worthwile option. On the boat I saw (450) you could drop either the signal mast hoop manually (for a small reduction in height) or the whole lot hydraulically. I had a manual stainless arch on my 37 and it was very heavy to drop and I would think a grp arch would be even heavier. Don't know about the davit crane but what I do know is that, if you have a heavy RIB and large o/b, suspending it from traditional davits is not a good idea. It puts a huge strain on the davits and their grp mountings particularly when the boat is bouncing around at sea. I've broken a couple of davits myself in this way. Much better to store the RIB on the bathing platform IMHO. If it's a light tender with small o/b, its not an issue

Thanks anyway Michael. I suppose it was a bit of a daft request /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif We are mixed inland and coastal for now, so the Brooms suit us. Flybridge boats around the 40ft+ mark will not fit under Killaloe bridge (3.6m) or under the guillotine gates to Ardnacrush hydro electric dam. We would be land locked with any of the Princesses, Fairlines or Sealines! (Targa 48 might be an exception)
/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif In fact many of the larger flybridge boats can only get to sea from Lough Derg on a low loader! But we can get to Dingle in one day if required on the water - freedom!

Another difference both on the coast and inland, is we always moor bow in when using a finger for aft privacy, and davit use, etc, which is the reverse on the med.

Hi, I probably put more hours on Calm Voyager than anyone else, so i'll give it go:

1. DECK ACCESS: How do you find the single aft access door to the cockpit, as opposed to the two either side on the 38, especially when single handed?

Never previously drove a 38 so can't compare, but found access was very good. Side decks are good and wide so getting around is very easy.

2. HELM BENCH SEAT: How do you find the helm bench seat as opposed to the individual seats on the 38? (ie ease and speed to get out for deck access if somebody sitting beside you)

Helm bench seat is comfortable and offers a good driving position and plenty big enough for two. Getting out does require your passenger to get out first, or they can just swing their legs around and let you slide past.

3. CANOPY: In practice how easy is this to completely open and stow on a nice day? (a pain on the 38CL).

To open the forward part is very easy, three clips to undo, remove the two side panels and it swing back against the arch. It can then dangle down and get in the way unless you fold it all up in its pouch but we never bothered, as if it starts to rain you want to be able to quickly slide it back. The aft part is a bit more fiddly so we usually never bothered.

4. RADAR ARCH: In reality how quick easy is it to drop the lot including the arch? (ie for low bridge) Is the motorised arch a must?

We had the hydraulic arch. You have to undo a certain amount of the aft canopy and a couple of safety bolts then push a button and down it comes. A manual one wouldn't take more effort in the preparation but will require a bit of manual labour. Don't know how heavy it is cos I didn't have to lift it.
