Just returned from England after looking for a boat suitable for coastal and inland waterways - no luck. someone suggested I look at the older Broom models. How is the headroom - I am 6'2". any one with experience taking one of these boats down the French canals? Are the hulls generally insulated so one can liveaboard in the colder months? Any advice would be appreciated.

We had an Ocean 37 1978 model and the head room was about 6foot3 or so. Not sure about Broom version, do you have a picture? Ours was a Med boat and like any boat with loads of windows, it cools down fast at night though the Eberspacher worked great.

The Continental first came out in about 1968 and the hull was still in use right up until the mid-80s on theCrown. Problem with them is they are all fitted with Perkins HT6.354 engines which apart from being notoriously smokey, spares are getting harder to obtain. The Continental itself... the phrase "they don't build them like that anymore" springs to mind. You should pick up a nice one for around £50-£55k.

Hi Skookumchuk I have a Broom Crown which is in fact up for sale. As Byron says this is a fine boat with a good hull, and the build quality is very good.

One point I do not agree with Byron on and that is about the HT6354 engines.
A) they dont smoke any more than most engines of that age, in fact mine have Soltron in the tanks which mean that apart from the usual start up smoke, theres non on the move.
B) Parts are still available, I recently got all the parts I needed to change the head gasket on the port engine. Moreover I chap has these engines on a boat in my Marina, and he has found an outlet where he can obtain new HT6354's (must be old stock but new) for £12k each.

The accomodation is fine for liveaboard as it has the huge aft owners suite with en suite shower & head etc. Mine had brand new Webasto heating system fitted last year. If you are interested she is on Brooms web site, www.broom-boats.co.uk they have two similarly priced same year, mine has higher spec and is named "Finola" You can pm me if you require more info. Regards CGN

Re: Skookumchuk

I forgot to mention I have had Brooms work on her whilst she is in there yard, lift out, antifoul, anodes, complete hull polish, interior clean etc.

By the way as an ex sailor you will be impressed by the size of her keel, which makes slow speed work in locks etc very positive. CGN

Spares should be no issue, the MOD had literally hundreds of these and thats where some of the spare new old stock engines are coming from. And the engine was used in just about every application you can think of from plant machinery, gen sets to vehicles. The market will be there for a very long time.

Ah yes forgot headroom, one of my friends is 6ft 3" and he had no probs in the main cabin, a bit lower in the forward and aft cabins but never a problem.
