After a year or so selling the old boat and trying to find something nice to replace it which ticked all our boxes we find our selves facing a rather less than secure financial outlook and rather thought a Broom 29 would see us through.

Has anyone owned one and feel able to comment on their general usability particularly how they handle without a bow thruster ? We plan to return to the Thames but other waterways are available !

Thought of trying the owners club but they are rather less obliging than YBW - cannot post unless a member - cannot join unless I own a Broom.

Still, you guys have never let me down .... :)

Never had a '29 in fairness, but our old 30 is very easy to handle on it's single engine and shaft, which is usually the worst combination!

I don't know of any bad Brooms model wise, but stand to be corrected.

The 29 lacks the space advantage of the aft cabin models of course, but looks comparable with other similar sized vessels.

Are there any 28-32 foot boats which really need a bowthruster? A good hand on the helm is all you need!

If that's the sort of boat you want, keep an eye open for the Haines 29 as well This might increase your chances just a little bit although the Haines rarely seem to come on the market and when they do, they are snapped up in days. Haines are often referred to as the boat Brooms ought to have built in that many of the models use the same basic mouldings but incorporate the numerous improvements people have suggested but Brooms refused to incorporated. One theory put forward for Brooms attitude was that they didn't want to go down the Fairline/Princess route of having Mk1, Mk2 etc variants of the same model. The interiors are of an equally high standard in both makes although the Haines does tend to be just that little bit more 'modern'.

Because of the demand for the Haines, you are likely to find the potential for negotiation on the asking price somewhat more limited.

Am I prejudiced? Of course I am. I did eventually manage to buy a Haines 31 Coastal Sedan but it took some effort and all the above is written based on recent experience. The last Haines 29 in this neck of the woods that I am aware of was at Bray last year and was in and out of there in less than 15 days, all surveyed, financed etc and taken away in double quick time. I went to see it the day it went up on their web-site only to find it had already been sold - bought I discovered subsquently, by a member of the F.U.C.C :)

I agree whole heartedly with Chris's statements. There's no denying the Broom 29 is a fine boat but the only advantage over the Haines 29 is the prestigious name of Broom. The Haines 29 is in reality a Broom with a load of carefully considered 'tweaks'.

YBM did a comparo on the Broom 29 and Haines 29 a while ago,you can download it.

be wary?

Depends where you wish to go!
Not sure that Haines did the soft top model of the Broom 29, which has folding screens and arch to limbo under Osney Bridge at Oxford. Nicely balanced looking boat. No worry about handling on a single and no thruster.
Interior layout of the Sedan versions of each are slightly different too, with Broom using the helm area for that only, whereas Haines did put a small settee in there and just the one helm seat.
I hear what Sir Pheran is saying about interior quality and agree that Haines have come a long way. Not sure that earlier 29's necesssarily have quite the same quality fit & finish but they did look a tad less traditional.
Not biased as only on 3rd Broom!!!

Quite right, Michael. Its amazing how quickly one's thinking becomes conditioned!

'Earlier' seems to equate to pre-1996. From the following year, when most models inherited the curved galley and Avonite worktops, the smaller Haines at least, have made Broom look like IKEA ........:D

Thanks for all this and it helps enormously.
Just discovered that the craft we are most interested in has a sea toilet only so pondering on the expense of fitting a holding tank. Any "temporary" chemical toilet would not find favour with SWMBO.

Fitting one to my chums boat cost around £800.00.

LH Jones (Cambs) have a good one at £48k which must be good value. Not sure if it has heating. They also have a very cute Nimbus 28 with plenty of accomodation, around same price, with all the kit.

Spot on - the LH Jones Broom was the one we were interested in. The trouble was that it was "poverty spec". No toilet storage tank, no radio few power points (12v and 240v). Not too much use but needed some money spending to meet the expectations of swmbo
Finally fell for the charms of a Renaissance 31 with much better spec for just a little more money.:)
