Broom 1070 question.

We are starting to look at getting another boat and came across a Broom 1070 with twin 130hp Volvo TAMD31 diesels. Most 1070s seem to have the larger 150hp engines and my question is would the 130s be adequate for some occasional coastal cruising as we would be generally using the boat on the river with maybe a short annual sea trip?

Thanks

Nick

Not a problem Nick. The 10/70 whilst not the best sea boat in the world no matter what engines are fitted is perfectly adequate with 130s. Cruise speed will be around 10-11 knots.

Yup, my Scand 32 with twin 165's cruises at 12 on just a whiff of throttle, 16-18 with quite a lot, and around 25-26 flat out. You wouldn't want to go flat out for long...LOL

Sea trip!? I'm assuming East coast...?

We kept our old boat at Hythe (Southampton) and we have decided to come back to The Thames again for convenience and cost. I (note the I rather than we...) would like to spend some time cruising the South Coast again but for the odd holiday. Having said that our main mission is to find something suited to the river and different to our previous boats.

East Coast could be fun though.

Thanks

You may wish to whisper that quietly in the ear of a few Thames based forumites...:)

.....and because we love The Thames which should go without saying. Only this morning we walked from Marlow to Hurley and it reminded us as to how lovely the river is.

Interestingly I think we only saw a dozen or so boats out.

The AD31 volvos were produced in 130hp and later on 150hp guises, the main difference is the rev limit which is raised to 4100rpm from 3700rpm to achieve the extra 20hp.
So its likely your cruise speed will be unaffected as both engines will produce the same power at say 3000rpm. I have the AD31P's which are the 150hp versions, I know
another forumite with an identical boat but with 130hp engines, from discussions with him there is practically no difference except for maybe a knot or so at the top end.

Thank you Chris - very helpful indeed

A friend of this forum has a 10/70 for sale with Norfolk Boat Sales. Been on for some time so could be a deal to be had. Believe it has 165hp VP's, but not certain.
