I replace the bearings for the windspeed indicator a couple of seasons ago and it worked fine for a season, then it stopped giving a reading.

I checked that it wasn't the dial that was at fault by the method recommended by B&G and then sent someone up the mast to take the MHU unit down.

As he was fiddling with it, a reading came up a couple of times then back to nothing. We liberally used contact cleaner but no joy - we couldn't get a reading again.

I would like to believe that it is a connection fault rather than the actual MHU at fault but may be deluding myself.

Does anyone know how to test this MHU or have I got to send it back for an expensive repair?

I have an idea on certain models once you have the unit off you can plug it directly into the control box via the correct plug connection best verify this first , thus you can check wind direction and speed by hand and also discount any problems in the mast cable etc.

Looking at these instructions - presumably I have to put 12v across Pin 1(black) and pin 2 (orange), spin the cups and see if there is any voltage generated at pin 3 (violet)?

I don't think so. The test instructions for windspeed concentrate on testing the display head and involve repeatedly and momentarily shorting the violet wire to ground. This should give a windspeed reading. If it doesn't, the display head is faulty. So it would seem that the spinning cups give a series of momentary grounding of the violet wire, which you could perhaps test with a multimeter on a resistance scale.
