need to replace this on my hillyard. took it out and noticeable wear on the inside stern gland end. does anyone know where replacement can be made up. thanks
It is possible to buy very thin stainless steel bushes to go over the worn parts of shafts where oil seals bear on them. It saves having to replace the whole shaft, which might be quite a complex one. Enquire at your local bearing supply shop. The only difficulty you may have is getting one further along a shaft when the bush is quite a tight fit on it.
Peter.
There is a company "up north" in bolton/burnley or somewhere close, I will get the name, who re-sleeves worn bronze shafts, with a heat/freeze system, which is a fine way of doing it. My shafts on Englander will need doing eventually. You could also replace the bronze shaft with stainless, cheaper than a new bronze shaft, but not as cheap as sleeving. I will contact my brother, he has the name of the company and get back to you.
I took the old bronze shaft out of my 5 tonner about 5 yrs ago with heavy wear in the areas of the cutlass and packing gland. Presented it to a non ferouse specialist in Sheffield who built it back up with bronze weld then machined it back to origonal for £50. Pulled the shaft last year just to check, still as new and no problems with compatability with the stern tube etc. might be worth looking through your yellow pages. Mike.
<hr width=100% size=1>My Mum say's I'm not a fat b@st@rd, just heavy boned.
Replacement SS shaft for my Hillyard 8 tonner (aft cockpit) was £80 from a local fabrication shop in Kilmarnock. Not bad as the shaft diameter is a bastard imperial measure.
Reason for replacement was crevice corrosion at the prop end.
If its any use (where are you?) pm me for the address.
