It's a lomg time since I used a broker to sell a boat so can anyone tell me what commission I should expect to pay?

Many thanks in advance.

I have talked to a large broker in Plymouth who said a lot of their business was done at 5%, don't know if that included VAT. You can haggle.

I have a friend who has made more than I will ever see in my accounts short of a lottery win through property. He has a rule NEVER to argue about brokers fees - well not until the deal is about to be done. SOMETIMES he will suggest to the estate agent that he would agree the sale that day if only the figures stacked up a little better - what with their fees to pay etc etc. If they are having a bad month then any fee income is better than none and they will often do a deal for a reduced fee at that point in the procedure. His rule is not to even hint at this until they have done their work enthusiastically finding him a customer for his property in the first place. He always argues that the agent will work rather less enthusiastically if they know from the outset that they are not getting a good fee for their work on his property.

When we sold our last boat, the broker did virtually nothing for his fee. We renegotiated his fee at the time of sale. He was happy and so were we.

On a slightly different tack, I cannot understand why brokers feel they can charge so much for boats when compared to Estate Agents.
6 to 8% is common for brokers, 1.5 - 3% for Estate Agents even if the sale price is at a similar level.
They all do as little as possible for their money.
To be honest, we tried brokers and just got a load of tyre kickers round.
In the end, I set up a web page with loads of photos and info and advertised on all the free sites out there and sold the boat that way.
I also have a suspicion that the brokers would rather undervalue the boat to get a quick sale - certainly my experience where the suggested initial selling price was £13000 less than the amount I eventually achieved.
Then again, why should we be surprised that boaty things are a rip off? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
