If you saw a boat advertised as a “year 2000 Bayliner 2855”, would you expect the boat to have been manufactured in 2000 or 1999 ?

The reason I ask is that I’ve been informed some Yacht Brokers advertise their boats as “year 2000” , meaning 2000 model but actually built in 1999.

Is this common practice?

And what happens to Joe Bloggs, who, all along believes he’s buying a 2000 boat, hands over his hard earned cash, only to find that when the boat is delivered and he looks at the documentation, it was actually manufactured in 1999.

Surely there would be a difference in price paid ??? or am I missing something here ??

If I purchased a second hand 1999 Ford car, I wouldn’t expect to pay more just because it was a 2000 model, in fact, if the seller advertised it as a 2000 Ford, surely he’d get jumped on my Trading Standards.

So, am I missing something? or in the words of the current Nationwide advert, when selling second hand boats “it doesn’t work like that”

Your comments please.

the key is the last 3 digits on the ser no stamped on transom of the boat if I remember correctly if it was stamped say 900 then the boat was made in 1999 but would be a 2000 model - i think

what it's advertised is basically an attractor and as long as it's factually correct should be ok - it will have a spec listing it's year of manufacture

most people are more interested in the model than the exact age - in this case the 2855 underwent a very significant change too the widebody around then which would be way more important than being built in 1989 or 2000!

Yes comment above is correct but the practice is common in the American boat industry. I ordered a new 2000 model boat at the 1999 SIBS it was delivered in March 2000. The boat had actually been built in December 1999 - but it had the 2000 designation on the hull.

The important thing to check is the last 3 digits on the hull, this is the date that matters.

Cars model year designation changes in August of the previous year. So since August, you will have been buying 2007 model year cars.
However, the log book will see them as 2006.
Worse, some 2006 model year cars wont have been sold out of the storage fields until January 2007, so that is a 2007 car too, but a 2006 model. Hmm.
Standard practice to meet the Car Shows. Started in America, but now pretty standard everywhere.

I think it should have been advertised as 1999 (2000 model). stating year 200o is misleading in my opinion. regardless its now 6 years on and value wont be affected, condition, options will be the key.

Thanks for all your input, but I have to confess, the actual boat was not a Bayliner, because of legal reasons I thought it better to change the name to protect the innocent.

The salesman and all the company advertising and details always referred to the boat as a “2000” even when the buyers informed the salesman that they had looked at many 1999 boats but never seen a 2000, surely the salesman should have said something.

From the information I have, the boat was advertised as a 2000 and the price reflected that. Had the boat been advertised as a 1999 at the same price, then maybe Joe Bloggs would have thought it too dear for the year and not purchased.

I think its quite common practice amongst dealers I bought a boat made in 1999 but commisioned in 2000
I think the service history would be a more relevant consideration with a boat
Some people on here have bought boats with low engine hours and had loads of trouble I think a boat runs better if its been used more rather than left to sit there
good luck

Cars are "born" as registration date Not build date

Boats are "commissioned" year Not build date

my boat was built in 1989 engines put in 1990 so a 1990 boat

There are fields full of new cars in the UK

cheers Joe

question is.. how to allow for depreciation. If you are told its a 2004 boat, would you pay the same if you then find its was made 2003? I suspect many wouldnt, which would imply there is a difference in peoples mind, even if not necessarily in wear and tear on the boat.

I am given to understand that some AWB and Mobo years run from August to September. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

As boats get older the situation gets even more muddled. My boat came with 25 years of sales documents intact. The build dates on the paperwork vary from 1982 to 1980,but Princess list the 33 as finished in 1980.It is possible that loads of hulls were laid up in 1979 but not sold until a couple of years later. On older stuff condition is the sole arbitor of price and the build date is really of no importance.

boat hin numbers start the new year on or around the 1st september every year. if you were to buy a boat from sibs this year, it would have been an 2006 bulid, but 2007 model.
if you were to get a survey done on the boat, your survey should confirm the year of build.

Oh no they don't. A boats HIN no tells you the following information. Country of origin, builder, model, build no, month built, year built, model year. You can build a boat in 2006, but have a model year no for whenever you like.... for instance.

GB-***32S16E607 would be a british built boat, by the *** boat company, 32S model designation, 16th of that model, built in May 2006, for the 2007 model year. Clear as mud ain't it
