Broken stainless clips Beware

I've had two broken stainless clips in the last few weeks. One on the outlet from the bilge pump, which showed signs of rusty corrosion and the other on the exhaust hose on the generator, immediately on the elbow. The latter showed no signs of corrosion and using a magnifying glass my best guess is brittle fracture -- though could have been induced by corrosion, of course.

Beware. There is a good case for replacing these things every five years and putting double clips on hoses below the waterline.

Any idea of the source. I have had a mixture on Chaka however I now use the ones with hex as well as screw slot and non of those have showed corrosion discolouration. SOme of the old ones certainly did.

Somebody will be along in a minute to point out that Jubilee is a registered trade mark and should not be used as a generic term for worm-drive hose clip ....

stangely and i hope not tempting fate my failure is from a batch of s/s clips from asap securing fresh water tank. At least 4 yrs old cant find why this one failed as all others throughout boat are as good as new

Whilst rebuilding all the heads etc, I came across quite a few clips that had corroded or were showing signs of corrosion, went mad and replaced the lot, double cliiped etc, with excellent quality ones with hexagon drives, clip drivers are the best thing invented for clips. Some are hidden by panelling, want to be sure they are OK.

Only double clipped? Forum thinking now recommends at least 3 clips per hose fitting. Don't you like your boat or sumthink?

[/ QUOTE ]Hear, hear. 4 clips are better AND Sikaflex smeared over the spigot before forcing the hose on. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have those on my exhausts, didnt know they were available in toilet hose sizes, bugger, I would have fitted those, but only room for one on most hose tails.

when i acquired my current vessel and investigated the 2 exhaust to manifold clips i discovered that each one was of such a size that they were only engaged on ONE thread of the worm /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Would love to see you get three clips on modern fittings, two are a push!!

On some older fittings (such as my toilet outlet seacock) there'e only room for one. I do inspect it regularly and may eventually replace the whole thing with one I can fit 3 or is it 4 clips on. 2 at least, anyway.

I myself machined up specially long hose barbs out of ceramic composite and fitted 32 hose clips to ensure a long life seal as well as submerging the entire unit, in fact the entire boat's machinery in a deep bed of epoxy resin.

On my last scuba foray to the sea bed, the entire machinery space appeared to be corrosion free.

Result.

NEVER is the operative word - no need to worry about the clips rusting away either - fit and forget and sell the boat before you need to change the hose..... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
