Broken Plank!

Well not exactly broken but I have found a split in one of the planks just below the seam. I was wondering what I should use to fill this (sawdust and glue?);

1.> If i go down the sawdust route what sort of glue should I use
2.> When I come to varnish I am using International Original at the moment, will this be sufficent to do the whole job or will I need to use a different type to finish off.

I would use a liquid epoxy to glue the crack. Tape the outside of the seam, which appears to be very close to the keel, with masking or gaffa tape. Then, working from the inside of the boat, run the liquid epoxy into the crack, pouring it in place from a plastic bottle commonly used for sauce at barbecues. Try to get it to wick down through the full depth of the crack. You may have to do this more than once, to get the gap filled completely. Allow time for the first application of epoxy to cure before applying any subsequent doses. You'll know when you've put enough in because the gap will be full on the inside of the boat.

Would this not prevent the seam from "tasking up", and possibly lead to further cracking?

Does the split go right through? I would suggest sawdust and Balcotan Glue or a flexible sealant such as Boatlife life-caulk or International Watertite before using epoxy.
Are you planning to varnish the bottom? Been using Epiphanes this year instead of International Schooner and have been so impressed will be using from now on.

I dont think it goes right through, but the seam has opened up enough to see daylight.

You mention _before using epoxy - does that mean you would use it after the glue or sealant, i was of the understanding this was a definite no no.

I hadnt planned on varnishing the bottom.

Did you use the same varnish throughout, or change the level of "thickness"

Mask up extenally, prime and knife in sikaflex.
Get the boat
a) in the water
b)some more paint/varnish to stop it drying out
c)a nice white cover to keep the sun off
d)Out of that field and into some shade

follow the above and you won't create any more splits.
