Stepping down from the mast steps I trod firmly on the hatch and there was a loud crack.(I am only 82 Kgs on a bad day)
Two questions:
Anyone had a similar experience?
And
Where to get a replacement acrylic panel which has two handles attached, presumably by very stong adhesive, so just buying a panel of the same size does not appear to be an option? ( have looked in the Lewmar website, but it appears the hatch is a non standard size, but on the plus side the frame is in two parts so fitting a replacement should be easy). I have written to Lewmar.

Michael.

There are a few firms around that will replace the acrylic for you - you either send the hatch to them and they do the job for you (turn around in just over a week) or they supply a kit with the ready cut acrylic, seals (if you wish) and bonding agent. Probably around £140 for a hatch of that size done for you.

I know because I have a few with some crazing and would like to have them repalced and have done a little research but not yet got around to having them done.

emandvee44,

I realise location may be a problem but if you don't have any luck try googling ' Eagle Windows ' in the East UK; they get a lot of good reports on here. Good luck !

would it be worth adding a dose of mitigation to prevent a re-occurence ? I have seen hatches with bars across the top. Not only do they protect the acrylic/lexan, but the give a bit of purchase for feet when you are heeled over.

In fact, thinking about it, is it worth buying a new 'lid' ready made with a grid ?

Your pictures are a bit small to see the tape measure, what are the overall dimensions of the hatch and what boat is it on?

Actually I'll take a punt at 276x556 and on a Bavaria.

Replacement acrylic (with handles) and new seal is Lewmar part number 361246990

You should be able to order this in via your preferred chandlery.

Ben (I work at Lewmar)

Thank you all for the suggestions.
It appears that there is the correct hatch acrylic on the Lewmar webshop but I had not found it. I have just returned to the boat and measured the hatch lid which appears to be 555 x 275, within a millimetre or so of what is on the webshop. I will probably order 2 plus some aircraft stickers "no step"

Michael.
