In 1923 the Jackman Yard in Brixham launched 'Torbay Lass'. 77' LOD and 85 tons of oak on oak Gaff rigged Brixham Trawler.
Famed for "Red Sails in the Sunset" written aboard her and the last salvage tow undersail; and winning the 1936 "King George V Perpetual Trophy"
Fishing for 15 years before being bought by Lady Claude Hamilton. Engines in, status to yacht and name changed to "Kenya Jacaranda".
1950 she became one of the first Sail Training Vessels in the UK; taking part in the early Tallships Races.
Run by the Mayflower Sail Training Society she has just completed a major rebuild to her starboard side, an interior shakeup and new props to put her into the tightest of berths.
A non profit making charity, the MSTS focuses on groups of profound hardship and social need.
Well. We're back and KJ with her expanse of canvas and sleek lines is looking to make her mark. This year we are contesting the The Brixham Trawler Race, The Small Ships Race, and exploring the thames estuary from our base in Tilbury.
We need members with interest or experience to encourage and teach our trainees; and groups of up to 12 to get their hands-to and experience life aboard a truly classic and traditional sailing trawler.
Weekends from £80, and the Brixham Trawler Race and Small Ships Race 2003 from £250.
Come and play.
